Yurie Sekiya’s Pero Pero★Sparkles characters are getting a TV anime

TV Tokyo is producing a television anime based on Yurie Sekiya’s Pero Pero★Sparkles character project.

The announcement marks the latest expansion for a set of characters Sekiya launched in 2013, which has since appeared on merchandise and in a 2020 YouTube anime.

From character project to television

Pero Pero★Sparkles began as a character project created by illustrator Yurie Sekiya. The project’s bright, mascot-like designs have since moved beyond illustrations into merchandise and short-form animation.

TV Tokyo has now confirmed that the characters are being developed into a new television anime. Details including the format, episode count, staff, cast, streaming plans and premiere date have not yet been announced.

The new series will be the first major television expansion for Pero Pero★Sparkles after the characters’ earlier online anime appearance.

Our opinion

This is a charmingly low-key anime announcement in an industry that often insists every new project needs a ten-minute trailer and a cinematic universe attached to it.

Pero Pero★Sparkles already has a decade of character identity behind it, along with merchandise and an earlier YouTube anime. The television version will need to find a reason to be more than a longer advert for cute things, but the move to TV suggests TV Tokyo sees enough life in the project to give it room to grow.

For now, the lack of a release date or staff details means this is one to watch rather than one to put on the calendar. More information will be needed before we know whether the characters can carry a full series.
