Whisper of the Heart returns to UK cinemas in 4K this September

Studio Ghibli’s Whisper of the Heart is returning to UK cinemas in a 4K remaster, giving one of the studio’s most quietly beloved films another chance to make audiences cry in public.

GKIDS has confirmed that the film will screen in IMAX from Wednesday, 16 September 2026, before expanding to cinemas across the UK from Friday, 18 September. Both English-dubbed and Japanese-language subtitled screenings will be available.

A coming-of-age classic returns

Released in 1995, Whisper of the Heart follows Shizuku, a daydreaming girl who is trying to work out what she wants from her life and whether she has the talent to pursue it.

A chance encounter with a mysterious cat leads Shizuku towards Seiji, a boy determined to follow his own creative ambitions, and The Baron, an antique cat figurine who becomes part of her imaginative journey.

The story moves between school, libraries and the everyday spaces of suburban Japan, turning ordinary places into the setting for a much bigger question: what happens when a young person realises that being interested in something is not the same as being good at it yet?

Yoshifumi Kondō’s only feature film

Whisper of the Heart was directed by Yoshifumi Kondō, a veteran animator who worked closely with Studio Ghibli. It was based on the manga by Aoi Hiiragi, with a screenplay and storyboards by Hayao Miyazaki.

Kondō died in 1998, making Whisper of the Heart his only completed feature as director. That history gives the film’s return an additional weight, although its appeal has never depended on nostalgia alone.

The film remains one of Ghibli’s most grounded stories. There are fantastical touches, but its real subject is the messy process of finding a voice, choosing a direction and accepting that the first version of your dream may not be the final one.

What the UK release includes

The 4K remaster will be shown in IMAX from 16 September, followed by a wider UK cinema release on 18 September. Audiences will be able to choose between English-dubbed and subtitled presentations.

GKIDS’ English-language version features the film’s established dub cast, while subtitled screenings preserve the original Japanese performances. Exact showtimes and participating cinemas vary, so viewers should check the official UK ticket listings.

The UK cinema programme also includes Kiki’s Delivery Service, which is receiving its own IMAX and wider theatrical run during the same period.

Our opinion

Whisper of the Heart is a perfect cinema re-release because it is intimate without being small. The film understands that a teenager’s first serious attempt at making something can feel as frightening as any world-ending adventure.

The 4K treatment and IMAX presentation may sound extravagant for a story about libraries, bicycles and a cat statue, but that is precisely why it works. Ghibli’s magic has always been about making ordinary life feel worth looking at carefully.

Kondō’s film also remains refreshingly honest about talent. Shizuku does not discover that she is secretly a genius; she discovers that wanting to create something means doing the work, accepting rough edges and continuing when the first result is embarrassing.

If you have never seen Whisper of the Heart on a cinema screen, this is an excellent excuse. If you have, the film is still dangerous: bring tissues, and do not pretend the ending will leave you emotionally intact.
