The film earned US $1,220,000 on its opening day on Friday, US $725,000 on Saturday, US $695,000 on Sunday, and an estimated US$535,000 on Monday. Crunchyroll and Sony Pictures Entertainment started screening the film in select theaters in the United States and Canada in 4K and IMAX on Friday, September 4. Our opinion

Akira does not need much help selling itself, but a strong opening for the 4K re-release is still useful evidence that audiences will leave the sofa for a properly presented classic. The result is encouraging for theatrical anime re-releases, particularly when the film has the visual muscle to benefit from a big screen. The sensible caveat is that one holiday weekend is not a revival movement on its own. This looks like a worthwhile cinema event, not proof that every older anime needs another trip to the multiplex.
