Arcanadea anime reveals more cast ahead of January 2027 debut

Kotobukiya’s Arcanadea is moving from collectible plastic models into a full television anime, and the fantasy-meets-VR project has now filled out more of its cast. A new teaser video confirms a January 2027 debut in Japan, giving the franchise a much bigger stage than the workbench.

The series will air on TV Asahi and 24 other stations in the NUMAnimation programming block, with a BS Asahi broadcast also planned. The announcement comes from the official Arcanadea anime site, alongside a report from Anime News Network.

A new cast for a world built from plastic and pixels

Nobunaga Shimazaki will play Shōgo Kuga, a university student and former VRMMO player who was once highly skilled at the game ARCANADEA. Konomi Inagaki joins as Kaho Asagi, while Mai Kanno voices Rin Kirinoue and Moka Kanzaki voices Ghi.

The returning and previously announced cast includes Kaede Hondo as Lumitea, Miho Okasaki as Velretta and Rina Hidaka as Yukumo. Hondo also voices Lumitea in YuruCanadea, the short video version of the franchise’s four-panel manga.

The team behind Arcanadea

Keiichirō Kawaguchi is directing at Yokohama Animation Lab, with Atsuhiro Tomioka overseeing series scripts. Kumoha Arakawa is adapting necömi’s original character designs for animation, although the official announcement notes that the name’s romanisation is not yet confirmed.

Yūki Hayashi and Yūki Furuhashi are composing the music. Their combined credits include My Hero Academia, Haikyu!! and My Hero Academia: Vigilantes, while Kawaguchi’s directing work includes Sket Dance, Spy Classroom and Psychic Squad. Tomioka has also worked on Pokémon XY, Trinity Blood and Fairy Tail: 100 Years Quest.

A VR fantasy world with real-world consequences

Arcanadea is set in the near future, after the discovery of a new energy source called Arcana Particles accelerates technological development. Eden Industries uses the technology to build Eden, described as the world’s largest virtual-space server.

Inside Eden sits ARCANADEA, a fantasy VRMMO. The situation turns decidedly less escapist after an explosion at Eden Industries during server maintenance. Abnormal weather, communication failures, disappearances and people developing enhanced physical abilities all follow, suggesting that the game and the real world are about to become uncomfortably entangled.

From model kits to a multimedia franchise

Kotobukiya launched Arcanadea in December 2021 as a bishōjo plastic-model series. The franchise has since expanded into merchandise, ASMR CDs and the official four-panel manga, with more than 500,000 figures shipped as of June 2025.

Our opinion

Arcanadea has the sort of premise that could either become a handsome toy advert stretched to 12 episodes or turn into a surprisingly rich story about the boundary between play and reality. The VRMMO disaster setup is familiar, but the plastic-model origins give the project a distinctive visual identity and a built-in cast of characters designed to be admired from every angle. January 2027 is still a long way off, but this teaser gives the anime enough shape to keep an eye on — especially if Yokohama Animation Lab can make the world feel bigger than the shelf it started on.
