The Cat and the Dragon lands a 2027 second season with Crunchyroll
The anime of Amara's Neko to Ryū novels will return in 2027, announced after the first season's finale, with Crunchyroll lined up to stream it.
The Cat and the Dragon has a second season, and it already has a home. The announcement landed at the end of the first season's final episode, putting the next run in 2027, with Crunchyroll saying it will stream it.
A 2027 return, and nothing more specific
The only thing anyone has committed to is the year. There is no month, no broadcast slot and no word on whether the first season's direction, writing or design team carries over, so a date would be invention at this point. The first season streamed first in Japan from 27 June on d Anime Store and ABEMA before the wider rollout.
Three illustrations to mark the news
Amara, the author of the Neko to Ryū novels, drew something to celebrate, and the anime's co-character designers Chiaki Kurakazu and Rie Nishino each drew one too. Their artwork went out alongside the announcement, and the teaser PV on the publisher's own channel carries the 2027 line in its title.
The first season was directed by Jin-Koo Oh at OLM, with scripts by Mitsutaka Hirota, character design by Rie Nishino and Chiaki Kurakazu, music by Takahiro Obata and sound direction by Noriyoshi Konuma. Takehito Koyasu and Kikuko Inoue led the cast. Whether any of those names return has not been announced.
Our opinion
There is something quietly radical about a fantasy series whose emotional high point is a dragon falling asleep in a field of cats, and The Cat and the Dragon made that work for a full cour without a villain worth the name. Committing to 2027 before the finale had even finished streaming is the right instinct for a show that has to grow by word of mouth rather than spectacle. The risk sits entirely in the gap: a year of silence is a long time for warmth to go cold.
