Gundam Forward brings The 08th MS Team model guide to English readers
Hobby Japan’s English Gundam Forward issue explores realistic Gunpla weathering and field repairs through The 08th MS Team.
Hobby Japan has released an English edition of Gundam Forward focused on Mobile Suit Gundam: The 08th MS Team, giving international Gunpla fans a new guide to making the series’ machines look convincingly field-worn.12
What the issue covers
The special issue marks 30 years of Mobile Suit Gundam: The 08th MS Team. Its central feature, “Next-Level Gunpla Realism”, asks how an 18-metre mobile suit would cope with real operating conditions, then translates that question into practical modelling advice.1 The guide examines space, jungle, desert and water environments, with notes on weathering, field repairs and details borrowed from modern military vehicles.1
Hobby Japan’s official description also lists professional builds of the Ground Type Gundam, Gundam Ez8, GM Ground Type, Gouf Custom, Zaku II, Acguy, Ball Type K and the High Mobility Prototype Zaku.1 That gives the issue a clear angle beyond a standard character or model catalogue: it treats the Universal Century machines as equipment that has to survive specific terrain, maintenance problems and combat conditions.
The publication also includes material on the wider Gundam 50th Anniversary Project, including the prologue film A Boy with Gundam and a roadmap running towards 2029.1 Other features cover figure reviews, modelling life and a closer look at the GGG Aina Sahalin figure.
Why The 08th MS Team still fits this approach
Originally released as an 11-episode OVA in 1996, The 08th MS Team remains one of the franchise’s most grounded stories. Its battles take place in jungles and villages rather than only in the space-opera set pieces that define much of Mobile Suit Gundam, making the series a natural match for a guide built around mud, damage, repairs and local conditions.2
The anniversary issue therefore connects the anime’s military perspective with the practical appeal of Gunpla. A weathered Ground Type Gundam is not just a display piece: the marks on its armour can suggest where it has fought, how it has been maintained and what its pilot has put it through.
The English edition went on sale on 7 October 2026.1 Hobby Japan’s product page links buyers in the US, UK, Canada and several European countries to regional Amazon stores, making the release easier to find outside Japan.1
Our opinion
This is a smart anniversary release because it gives The 08th MS Team a practical reason to return to the spotlight. The best Gunpla guides do more than show finished models; they explain why a surface should look scratched, dusty or hastily repaired. By tying those choices to terrain and maintenance, Gundam Forward makes the hobby feel like an extension of the anime’s world rather than a separate merchandise exercise. The international edition is especially useful because the franchise’s grounded military detail has always been one of its strongest selling points, and this format lets modellers build on that strength without needing to read the Japanese edition first.
