Looks like a Job for a Maid! light novels are getting a TV anime

Earth Star Novel confirmed the television adaptation on 1 October and published a teaser video, with the ninth volume of Yasuaki Mikami's series due on 15 October.

Nina, a small brown-haired maid in glasses and a white apron, smiling in the middle of a group

Yasuaki Mikami's light novel series Looks like a Job for a Maid! The Tales of a Dismissed Supermaid is being adapted for television. Earth Star Novel announced the TV anime on 1 October on the publisher's official news page and put out a short teaser on its own YouTube channel. No studio, broadcast window or cast has been named yet.

What the series is

The story follows Nina, a small and plain maid working in the house of Count Mirkwood. A false accusation over a broken vase gets her thrown out, and she sets off on the first journey of her life, only to discover that the household she left behind cannot function without her. She is not an ordinary maid, and the people she meets on the road — Emily, a mage who cannot control her magic, Astrid, an inventor whose experiments never work, and Tien, an orphan who cannot keep a meal down — are the first to find out.

Where the books stand

Mikami began publishing the story on the user-generated novel site Shōsetsuka ni Narō in 2021, and Earth Star Entertainment started printing the volumes with illustrations by Kinta in July 2022. The ninth is scheduled for 15 October. Ayahito Kumagai's manga adaptation launched on the Comic Earth Star site in October 2022 and had reached seven collected volumes by May. J-Novel Club publishes the novels and the manga in English.

Our opinion

The dismissed-supermaid setup is doing quiet, well-engineered work here. Nina is the most dependable protagonist the genre has, because she is indispensable, invisible to the people she serves and owed an apology by all of them, and the false accusation exists to put the reader on her side before she has done a single thing. That this began as a free web novel on Shōsetsuka ni Narō is the other half of the story: the anime pipeline keeps mining the same farm, and the titles that survive the trip are usually the ones built around one instantly legible hook. The announcement is missing the part that decides whether any of it lands, which is the studio, and Earth Star has confirmed an adaptation before naming the people who will make it.
