Oshiri Tantei returns with seven new autumn cases

The official site for Oshiri Tantei published the autumn promotional video and the full broadcast schedule on 18 September. Seven new episodes begin on NHK E-TV on 3 October, running on Saturdays from 09:00 to 09:20 with a repeat the following Thursday at 19:00. The run opens with episode 132 and closes with episode 138 on 14 November, and the broadcaster notes that the dates can still move.

A younger Dandy takes the lead

The centrepiece is a younger version of Oshiri Dandy, the detective's father. The new storyline follows his adventures as a young man and sets him against a new rival named Arachin in a contest over buried treasure, which is the first time the series has reached back a generation for a main plot. The supporting cast get their own trouble: the Nandemo Kaiketsu Club runs into a genuine case while training as detectives, and one episode stages a wrestling bout fought over a hidden treasure. The production is pitching the stretch as its most action-heavy run yet.

Why the franchise keeps going

Oshiri Tantei comes from Troll's picture books, published by Poplar, and has been an NHK E-TV fixture long enough that its audience has grown up inside it. That is what makes a flashback arc a sensible commission rather than a filler run: viewers who have watched the detective solve cases for years already trust the character, and showing where he came from gives the show somewhere new to go without asking anyone to learn a new cast. The short Saturday slot and the Thursday repeat are built around the same idea, and the production committee credit Troll, Poplar and the Oshiri Tantei committee together.

Our opinion

Children's anime that survives a decade does it by refusing to grow up with its audience, and the young-Dandy arc is the smart version of that instinct. It adds continuity for the parents watching alongside their children without making the jokes any more complicated, and it gives a long-running series a reason to redraw a character everyone already knows. Most franchises in this position simply add a new sidekick and hope.

The risk is that Arachin is a one-arc villain. Oshiri Tantei has a small enough recurring cast that a new adversary is a real event, and the treasure-hunt framing suggests the show intends to use him properly rather than as a single-episode obstacle. Seven episodes is a short window to establish a rival worth keeping, though, and a season that ends on 14 November leaves plenty of schedule for the answer.
