Ouran High School Host Club Blu-ray box returns for 20th anniversary
Ouran High School Host Club returns on Japanese Blu-ray this December with all 26 episodes, a new anniversary visual and returning audio commentary.
Ouran High School Host Club (桜蘭高校ホスト部) is returning to home video in Japan with a new special-price Blu-ray box celebrating the anime’s 20th anniversary. VAP lists the five-disc set for release on 16 December 2026 at ¥15,400 including tax. 12
The release collects all 26 episodes of the 2006 television anime, which follows Haruhi Fujioka after she breaks an expensive vase belonging to the wealthy members of Ouran Academy’s Host Club. The club’s six boys turn her into a reluctant host after discovering that she is actually a girl, setting up the series’ mix of school comedy, romance and class satire. 2
What the new Blu-ray includes
VAP’s product listing confirms the 20th-anniversary special-price edition, while Anime! Anime! reports that it includes the complete 628-minute series across five discs. The set also retains audio commentary featuring lead actor Maaya Sakamoto, director Takuya Igarashi and series composer Yoji Enokido, alongside the performances of Mamoru Miyano and the rest of the cast. 12
The packaging uses a newly drawn visual by character designer and chief animation director Kumiko Takahashi. The new illustration places the Host Club cast together on a red presentation box, giving the reissue a clear anniversary identity rather than simply recycling the original packaging. 12
VAP also lists retailer bonuses. VAP STORE is offering an acrylic board, Amazon Japan a 10-card visual sheet set, and Animate a postcard-sized bromide set using the new Blu-ray artwork. Other general retailers are due to offer an original mini shikishi board, with the exact availability depending on the shop. 2
Why this reissue matters
For international fans, the announcement is a Japanese home-video release rather than confirmation of a new season or remake. That distinction matters: the product celebrates the existing 2006 adaptation, and the announcement does not announce new animation. It does, however, give one of the period’s most recognisable romantic comedies a fresh physical release at a time when anniversary editions are increasingly being used to keep older catalogue anime visible.
The set’s strongest selling point is completeness. Alongside every episode, the returning commentary gives the box a little more archival value than a bare repackaging. The new visual also makes the edition easier to identify for collectors, while the retailer bonuses turn the release into a typical Japanese character-goods launch rather than a purely utilitarian disc upgrade.
Our opinion
This is a straightforward anniversary reissue, but it is a well-targeted one. Ouran High School Host Club still has a strong visual identity, and a newly drawn cast image is a better reason to revisit the series than a generic “20 years later” sticker. The announcement is worth noting for existing fans, although anyone hoping for a continuation should not read a Blu-ray release as evidence that one is in production.
The practical caveat is that this is a Japan-focused product announcement. Buyers outside Japan will need to check region, subtitles and import pricing before ordering, and the ¥15,400 price does not automatically tell us what an overseas retailer will charge.
