Yurie Sekiya’s Pero Pero★Sparkles characters are getting a TV anime

TV Tokyo is expanding the illustrator’s character project into a new television anime, with further details still to come.

Yurie Sekiya’s Pero Pero★Sparkles characters are getting a TV anime.

TV Tokyo is producing a television anime based on Yurie Sekiya’s Pero Pero★Sparkles character project.

The announcement marks the latest expansion for a set of characters Sekiya launched in 2013, which has since appeared on merchandise and in a 2020 YouTube anime.

From character project to television

Pero Pero★Sparkles began as a character project created by illustrator Yurie Sekiya. The project’s bright, mascot-like designs have since moved beyond illustrations into merchandise and short-form animation.

TV Tokyo has now confirmed that the characters are being developed into a new television anime. Details including the format, episode count, staff, cast, streaming plans and premiere date have not yet been announced.

A small project gets a bigger stage

The new series will be the first major television expansion for Pero Pero★Sparkles after the characters’ earlier online anime appearance.

That move gives TV Tokyo room to introduce the project to viewers who may know the characters from merchandise, while giving existing fans a longer-running story to follow.

Our opinion

Pero Pero★Sparkles has more foundation than a brand-new mascot pitch: Yurie Sekiya’s project dates back to 2013, has reached merchandise and already had a 2020 YouTube anime. A television series could give those characters room to become a proper cast rather than remaining attractive things on shelves. It could also become a longer advert with opening credits, because the announcement offers no story, format, staff, cast, episode count or release date yet. The sensible verdict is watch. TV Tokyo’s involvement makes the expansion notable, but the missing creative detail must do the convincing.
