Spice & Wolf: merchant meets the wise wolf Season 2 anime debuts in 2027

The merchant and the wise wolf are preparing to hit the road again. Spice & Wolf: merchant meets the wise wolf Season 2 has been confirmed for a 2027 broadcast, with the official website unveiling a second teaser visual and a returning team of key staff.

What’s actually going on: Takeo Takahashi returns as chief director, while Hijiri Sanpei — director of the first season — remains involved. Nobuyoshi Nagayama and Takahiro Majima are directing Season 2 at Passione.

Koji Haneda returns to character design alongside Rina Sugimoto. Kevin Penkin is also back to compose the music. Additional staff includes colour designer Tomoko Koyama, art setting artist Morihito Ōhara, art director Kazuhiro Inoue, director of photography Yuki Okada and editor Ayako Tan.

The 2027 announcement does not include a season, month or exact broadcast date. No broadcaster, streaming service or international release schedule has been confirmed yet. Crunchyroll streamed the first season as it aired and provided an English dub, but that does not automatically confirm the same arrangement for Season 2.

The first season debuted in April 2024 and ran for two consecutive cours. It is a completely new adaptation of Isuna Hasekura’s novels, following travelling merchant Kraft Lawrence and Holo, a wolf goddess who joins him on the road after striking a bargain for passage.

Jun Fukuyama returns as Kraft Lawrence and Ami Koshimizu returns as Holo. Mai Nakahara also voices Norah Arendt. The original novel series began in 2006 with illustrations by Jū Ayakura, and its 25th volume is scheduled to ship on 9 October.

Why you should care: Spice & Wolf stands apart from many fantasy anime because its central tension is not simply about defeating a monster or saving the world. Lawrence and Holo’s journey is built around trade, negotiation, risk and the increasingly complicated relationship between a travelling merchant and an ancient goddess.

That gives the new season plenty of room to continue its blend of economics, folklore and character drama. The returning staff should also help preserve the first season’s identity, although the 2027 window means fans still have a long wait before the next leg of the journey begins.

Our opinion

A second season of Spice & Wolf: merchant meets the wise wolf is excellent news for anyone who prefers their fantasy with sharp dialogue and an aggressively well-informed opinion about grain prices. The 2027 date is vague, but the returning creative team is reassuring. Now all we need is a proper release window — and perhaps a guarantee that Holo will continue stealing every scene she enters.
