Tapas is shutting down and readers will lose their unlocked episodes
Kakao Entertainment's webtoon platform Tapas closes on 31 March 2027, and the official end-of-service FAQ confirms unlocked episodes cannot be read, transferred or refunded afterwards.

Tapas will shut down on 31 March 2027, and the platform’s own end-of-service FAQ spells out what that means for readers: unlocked episodes become unreadable, content cannot be moved to another Kakao service, and Ink purchases are non-refundable.
What the official FAQ confirms
Tapas published the End of Service FAQ on 30 September and updated it on 1 October. The last day to use Ink, unlock episodes and access content is 31 March 2027 at 23:59 Pacific Time, and the service ends at the same moment. Readers keep access right up to that point, and nothing survives it.
The part that will sting is how unlocked episodes are handled. Tapas states plainly that after the end of service users can no longer access the platform “including any previously unlocked content”, and that content unlocked on Tapas cannot be transferred to another Kakao service or platform such as Kakao Page or Kakao Webtoon. Refunds are not on the table either: the FAQ says all Ink transactions are final and non-refundable.
One deadline has already passed. Since 1 October, users can no longer acquire additional Ink, including the free Ink the app used to hand out. There are no plans for further sales or events before the shutdown and content prices are unchanged. Anyone who wants a copy of their account and personal data has to request it by email.
What creators have been told
Creators get a softer landing. Tapas says titles stay available through 31 March 2027 unless they are removed earlier, and that new material can still be published for now. Anyone who wants a title taken down before the shutdown can ask through the Creator Inquiry Form. Questions about exclusivity clauses are reviewed against each creator’s own agreement, and Tapas has not announced a wider migration of its catalogue to another Kakao platform.
Our opinion
What stands out about the Tapas FAQ is how much of it is written in the negative: cannot transfer, cannot access, non-refundable. That reads less like a company being unusually cold than a digital shopfront being unusually honest about how little a purchase actually buys. Tapas deserves credit for publishing the terms in advance, with dates attached, rather than letting the site go dark and leaving readers to work it out for themselves. But “we told you clearly that your library expires” is a defence of the notice, not of the model. Kakao Entertainment has spent years assembling a story business in North America, and readers spent their own money inside it; the shelf now leaves with the shop. The industry has spent a decade letting “you bought it” mean a lifetime licence, and Tapas is the reminder that it has usually been a lease with a quiet end date.
