Teenage Mercenary gets J.C. Staff anime for 2027
The Teenage Mercenary webtoon is heading to television in 2027, with J.C. Staff animating Manabu Ono's adaptation.

The Teenage Mercenary webtoon is being adapted into a television anime for 2027, with J.C. Staff handling animation. The announcement appeared on the project's official Japanese website on 9 October, following the series' New York Comic Con reveal.
What has been announced
Manabu Ono is directing and overseeing the series composition, while Koji Haneda is handling character design and Hiroyuki Sawano is composing the music. Hayate is producing the project.
The story follows Yu Ijin, known as Sōma Tatewaki in the Japanese version. After surviving a plane crash as a child, he spends years as a mercenary before returning to Korea and trying to navigate ordinary school life.
A major webtoon adaptation
Created by YC and illustrated by Rakyeon, the series began in Korea in 2020 and later launched on LINE Manga in Japan. The official anime site says it has passed 2.84 billion views worldwide across ten languages, giving the adaptation a substantial audience before its broadcast debut.
No specific Japanese broadcast date or international streaming partner has been announced yet. The official site currently confirms the 2027 television window and introduces the production staff, so more detailed scheduling will have to wait.
Our opinion
This is a smart property for J.C. Staff because Teenage Mercenary already has the kind of high-concept hook that reads instantly in a trailer: a former child soldier trying to survive school. The difficult part will be balance. Its action needs weight, but the quieter family and classroom material is what stops the premise becoming a string of interchangeable fights. Sawano is an obvious fit for the scale, while Ono's dual directing and series-composition role suggests the adaptation has a firm creative centre. Until the first footage arrives, the 2027 window is promising rather than proof of quality.
