Be Forever Yamato: Rebel 3199 sets its finale for 30 October

The Yamato yo Towa ni: Rebel 3199 project has just shown us its final card. Bandai Namco Filmworks has unveiled the main trailer and key visual for Nijiiro no Rinne (Rainbow-Coloured Reincarnation), the seventh and last film in the Space Battleship Yamato remake saga, and it opens in Japanese cinemas on 30 October 2026.

What is actually going on: Rebel 3199 is not a conventional television run. The story is told as 26 episodes split across seven theatrical films, and Nijiiro no Rinne is the one that closes the loop. The sixth film, Aoi Meikyu (Blue Labyrinth), opened on 26 June, which leaves the finale roughly four months behind it - a brisk turnaround for a saga that started with Kuro no Shinryaku (Dark Invasion) in July 2024.

The new key visual is drawn by character designer Nobuteru Yuki, a veteran of the franchise's earlier chapters. Naomichi Yamato directs, with Harutoshi Fukui supervising and sharing script duties with Hideki Oka. Junichiro Tamamori, Mika Akitaka and Yasushi Ishizu are credited for mechanical designs.

In the story, the Yamato passes through a space-time node that drops its crew into the Reiwa era - present-day Tokyo, 2026 - which is the sort of premise that lets a 1970s space opera take the measure of the world it helped shape.

Why you should care

Because this is the end of one of the more interesting experiments in modern anime distribution. Turning 26 episodes into seven cinema releases meant every chapter had to work as an event rather than an episode, and it means there is no tidy “season three” to point newcomers at. If you have been waiting for the whole thing to finish before starting, October is when that countdown stops being theoretical.

One caveat for UK and European readers: the film is announced for Japanese cinemas only, and there is no international theatrical or simulcast date to report. Crunchyroll streams the saga internationally as Star Blazers: Space Battleship Yamato 3199, which remains the likely - but unconfirmed - route to the last chapter outside Japan.

Our opinion

Seven films for 26 episodes was a gamble, and it has mostly paid off. The theatrical format gave the animation a budget weekly television would never have signed off, and Rebel 3199 has looked the part since the first chapter. The catch is rhythm: stretching a story across years makes momentum hard to hold, and the gap between the sixth film and this finale is generous even by the project's own standards.

So we are glad it is finishing, and a little sad about it. Do not expect an international cinema run, and do not expect Nijiiro no Rinne to make sense if you have skipped the six chapters before it. The Yamato faithful will be there on 30 October regardless - they have waited long enough for this particular road to close.
