Animate LACHIC Fukuoka Tenjin has opened in central Fukuoka as Kyushu’s largest Animate shop, bringing a larger anime and manga retail destination, a café and several specialist spaces to the region. The store opened on October 24 at the eighth floor of Fukuoka Mitsukoshi, inside the LACHIC Fukuoka Tenjin complex.1

The new location carries the expected mix of character goods, comics, CDs and Blu-rays, but its pitch is broader than a standard shop. Animate says the site includes Animate Gratte, Space A la mode, Space Galleria Fukuoka and CyConveni, with several of those areas making their Kyushu debut.2

The opening ceremony featured voice actor and GRANRODEO vocalist Kishow Taniyama, who plays Chuya Nakahara in Bungo Stray Dogs. The ceremony also tied the shop to the upcoming Bungo Stray Dogs Art & Design Exhibition, which is scheduled to run at Space Galleria Fukuoka from November 20. Taniyama signed a Nakahara standee at the event, with the display planned to remain in the store until November 23.1

Animate LACHIC Fukuoka Tenjin is directly connected to Nishitetsu Fukuoka (Tenjin) Station. It is open from 10am to 8pm at 8F Fukuoka Mitsukoshi, 2-1-1 Tenjin, Chuo-ku, Fukuoka City.2

Our opinion

This is more than a bigger shop floor for anime fans. The café, gallery and specialist retail spaces give Animate a reason to be visited repeatedly, while the Fukuoka location’s station connection makes it an unusually practical regional destination. The real test will be whether its rotating exhibitions and collaborations keep that extra space feeling active after the opening-week buzz fades.
