Baki spin-off Kaioh Retsu gets a TV anime

Baki is heading somewhere even more ridiculous than usual. The BAKI GAIDEN: KAIOH RETSU Doesn’t Mind Getting Isekai’d spin-off manga is officially being adapted into a television anime, sending the legendary martial artist Retsu Kaioh from underground combat to a fantasy world packed with swords, magic and monsters.
The announcement came through the official Baki anime account and was corroborated by Anime Corner. TMS Entertainment is handling animation production, with the project based on the manga spin-off created from Keisuke Itagaki’s original concept.
Retsu Kaioh gets a second life
The story begins after Retsu’s battle with Musashi Miyamoto. Rather than ending his journey there, the spin-off gives the Chinese kenpo master an entirely new arena: another world where the rules of combat are less concerned with sporting regulations and more concerned with surviving swordsmen, magic and monsters.
Sai Ihara writes the manga story, while Eiji Murai provides the art. The series has been running in Akita Shoten’s Monthly Shonen Champion since 2020, giving the anime plenty of source material to draw from. The official announcement has confirmed the adaptation and its premise, but not a broadcast date, cast, streaming service or international distributor.
Why this crossover makes sense
On paper, throwing a martial-arts champion into a fantasy world sounds like the sort of idea produced by a writers’ room that has stopped pretending to sleep. In practice, Retsu is a strangely good fit. Baki has always treated fighting styles as their own mythology, so replacing concrete floors and prison yards with fantasy battlefields is less a change of genre than a change of wallpaper.

Our opinion
This is exactly the kind of spin-off anime that could be brilliant, daft or — ideally — brilliantly daft. Retsu Kaioh already has the discipline and theatrical intensity to carry a fantasy adventure, while the isekai premise gives TMS permission to throw increasingly absurd opponents at him. There is no release date yet, so this is a watch-list item rather than a countdown. But if the adaptation understands that the joke is best delivered with a completely straight face, Kaioh Retsu could be one of anime’s most entertainingly unhinged announcements.
