Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War delays its next two episodes

Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War - The Calamity has delayed its next two episodes, pushing the anime’s climax back by a week. Episodes 49 and 50 will now air in Japan on 19 and 26 October respectively.

The production committee says the extra time is being used to improve the quality of the anime as the final part of Ichigo’s long-running battle heads towards its conclusion. Sensible in theory, although fans may feel that “please wait while we make it better” is not much comfort when the cliffhanger is already doing its job.

What's actually going on

Episode 49 is now scheduled for Monday 19 October at midnight Japanese time, effectively the early hours of 20 October depending on how the broadcaster lists the slot. Episode 50 follows on Monday 26 October at the same time.

A selection of earlier episodes will air in the weeks before the delayed pair: episode 7 on 19 September, episode 28 on 26 September, episode 46 on 5 October and episode 48 on 12 October. The recap schedule is designed to lead viewers back into the story before the final run resumes.

The Calamity is the fourth and final part of the Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War anime. It premiered in Japan on 25 July and covers the remaining material from Tite Kubo’s original manga, whose final arc spans volumes 55 through 74.

Why you should care

Delays are frustrating, but this is exactly the sort of delay that can prevent a major finale from being rushed. The final cour has to land the ending of one of anime’s biggest modern arcs, and a little extra production time is preferable to a visibly compromised climax.

Our opinion

Nobody enjoys a delayed finale, especially when the replacement is a recap schedule that politely asks everyone to relive the emotional damage. Still, a quality-focused delay is the right call for Bleach. Give the finale the time it needs — just do not make us wait another decade for the next update.
