Eiga Chiikawa: Ningyo no Shima no Himitsu ( Chiikawa the Movie: The Secret of Mermaid Island), the first anime film adaptation of Nagano 's Chiikawa manga, rose from #2 to #1 in its seventh weekend in the Japan box office from Friday to Sunday, and sold 928,000 tickets to earn 1,415,274,600 yen (about US$9.23 million) over the three days.

The film has sold 9.60 million tickets and has earned a cumulative total of 13,895,602,400 yen (about US$90.70 million). The film has now surpassed Detective Conan: Highway no Datenshi 's ( Detective Conan: Fallen Angel of the Highway ) 13.7 billion yen (about US$87.8 million) cumulative earning, and is currently the biggest film in Japan this year.

Our opinion

The announcement gives this project a clear reason to stay on the radar, but trailers and release windows are only promises. The interesting part is now whether the finished game or anime turns its distinctive idea into something that holds up beyond the headline.
