Chiikawa Mermaid Island tote bag gets a five-design rerelease
Parade is rereleasing a five-design Chiikawa tote bag from The Secret of Mermaid Island, with each ¥500 capsule containing a foldable A4-sized design.
Parade is rereleasing a five-design capsule-toy tote bag based on Chiikawa: The Secret of Mermaid Island, the first feature film starring the tiny characters created by Nagano. The compact bag is designed to fold into its own pocket, and each version uses a different scene from the film’s mermaid-island story.12
The product, titled Eiga Chiikawa Ningyo no Shima no Himitsu Tote Bag in Japanese (『映画ちいかわ 人魚の島のひみつ トートバッグ』), originally appeared as a capsule-toy release in August 2026. Parade’s announcement says the rerelease will include five designs and that the bag is sized to fit A4 documents, making it more useful than a purely decorative character collectible.1
The five designs
The artwork draws from the film’s Siren storyline. The five motifs show Chiikawa wandering through the forest, Usagi holding the film’s distinctive “binyoyo” prop, Shisa beside sweets, Rakko and Momonga caught up in kelp, and the Siren seasoning island residents. The range gives the rerelease a broad spread of the film’s cast rather than repeating one hero image across every version.1
Each capsule costs ¥500, including tax. Parade says the release timing and other details will be announced later through its official capsule-toy channels, including the company’s official X account. That means fans know the price and format, but not yet the exact date or availability schedule.1
The bag is tied to Chiikawa: The Secret of Mermaid Island, whose official TOHO site presents the film as a colourful island adventure and confirms the film’s Japanese title, 『映画ちいかわ 人魚の島のひみつ』. The site also identifies TOHO as distributor and carries the film’s official visual used for this article’s hero.2
What fans need to know
This is a rerelease, not a new film announcement or a new character reveal. The appeal is the practical format: the A4-sized tote can be carried as a small pouch when folded, then opened when fans need extra space. The five designs also make it a capsule-toy hunt, with the usual uncertainty over which version appears in each ¥500 capsule.
For readers outside Japan, the official product page is the key place to watch for timing and distribution information. Parade has not supplied a wider international rollout in the announcement, so imported stock and resale listings should not be treated as confirmation of an overseas release.
Our opinion
A foldable tote is a much more useful bit of Chiikawa merchandise than another shelf-bound trinket, and the five film-specific scenes give the rerelease a clear identity. The only missing piece is the launch date: until Parade publishes it, this is one to keep an eye on rather than rush out to hunt.
