Detective Precure's Ojamajo Doremi crossover sparks online excitement
Detective Precure's Halloween episode brings Ojamajo Doremi into the story, sending the crossover straight to Japan's online trends.
The latest episode of Detective Precure! (名探偵プリキュア!) has delivered a one-off crossover with Ojamajo Doremi (おジャ魔女どれみ), turning the series' Halloween story into a bright reunion for fans of both magical-girl shows.1
Episode 39, titled Ojamajo Halloween, aired in Japan on 25 October. The episode follows An-na and the other members of the Cure At Detective Agency as they prepare costumes and props for a Halloween event in their shopping district. The story then sends them looking after a young girl who has become separated from her mother.1
The crossover arrives through the episode's costumes and presentation. The four Detective Precure! heroines appear dressed as witches from Ojamajo Doremi, a series known for its magical apprentices and colourful transformation designs. The official episode preview shows the cast in a ribbon-framed Halloween visual, with the episode title and the show's logo prominently displayed.2
The collaboration also marks the first time Detective Precure! has crossed over with Ojamajo Doremi in an episode story, according to the report. The pairing makes sense on both sides: Ojamajo Doremi remains one of the best-known magical-girl anime of its era, while Detective Precure! is using its current Halloween episode to bring that earlier style of character design into a new broadcast series.1
The episode's online reaction was immediate. Oricon reported that “Ojamajo” reached the top of Japan's X trends after the broadcast, with viewers reacting to the costumes and the recognisable details in the crossover. That response is less a surprise than a reminder that a short visual callback can do a lot of work when the original series still has a committed audience.1
The official preview also confirms the broadcast context: Detective Precure! airs on ABC TV and TV Asahi's network in Japan on Sunday mornings. The thumbnail is used here as the hero because it is an official promotional image from the Precure channel and clearly shows the four protagonists in their Halloween outfits.2
Our opinion
This is the sort of crossover that understands its assignment. It does not need to rebuild Ojamajo Doremi or turn the episode into a history lesson; putting the current cast into familiar witch costumes is enough to make the connection instantly readable. The visual is colourful, specific and timed to Halloween, while the episode still has its own story about helping a lost child. That balance makes the collaboration feel like a proper episode rather than a publicity-only cameo.
For international viewers, the bigger question is access. The episode's broadcast is a Japanese television event, and the official preview is the clearest widely available window into the collaboration for now. Even so, the crossover has already done what a good anniversary-style surprise should do: it has made people remember the older show while giving the newer one a moment that belongs entirely to it.
