Doraemon’s 2027 film sets a 5 March Japan opening
The teaser places Nobita and his friends in Victorian London, with a script from The Tatami Galaxy writer Makoto Ueda.
The official website for the 2027 Doraemon film has begun streaming a teaser, confirming that Eiga Doraemon: Nobita no Jōki Jikansha (Doraemon the Movie: Nobita’s Steam Time Locomotive) opens in Japan on 5 March 2027.
The story sends Nobita and his friends back to 19th-century Victorian London, and the teaser dresses the pair in period costume beside a steam locomotive.
Who is making it
Rushio Moriyama directs, having storyboarded and directed episodes of the Doraemon television series since 2020. Makoto Ueda, whose credits include The Tatami Galaxy, Tatami Time Machine Blues and Penguin Highway, writes the script. Toho is distributing.
The film follows 2026’s Eiga Doraemon: Shin Nobita no Kaitei Kiganjō (Doraemon the Movie: New Nobita and the Castle of the Undersea Devil), which opened in Japan on 27 February. Fujiko F. Fujio’s original manga remains the source for the series.
Our opinion
A Doraemon film is about as close as Japanese cinema gets to a reliable annual event, and handing the script to Makoto Ueda is a genuinely interesting move. Ueda writes time loops for a living: The Tatami Galaxy and Tatami Time Machine Blues are both built on them, so a story about Nobita travelling into Victorian London could carry more structural mischief than the franchise usually allows. Moriyama’s promotion from episode director is the quieter bet, but the series has trained its directors well for decades and the teaser suggests the machinery is in safe hands.
