Haikyu!! and Devilman Crybaby land on UK Blu-ray
Crunchyroll's fourth season of Haikyu!! and Anime Limited's standard edition of Devilman Crybaby both reach UK shops on 21 September, with prices, ratings and on-disc extras confirmed on the distributors' listings.
Two anime series arrive on UK Blu-ray on Monday 21 September: the fourth season of Haikyu!! from Crunchyroll, and a standard edition of Devilman Crybaby from Anime Limited. Both are up for order now, and both listings confirm prices, ratings and extras in the same week, which is a busier Monday for physical anime than the UK has had in a while.
What is on each release
Haikyu!! TO THE TOP collects the complete fourth season, episodes one to twenty-five, along with two OVA episodes. The audio is English 5.1 and Japanese stereo with English subtitles, and the on-disc extras are the eye-catch animations and the textless opening and ending songs. It is rated 12, sits in region A/B, and carries a suggested retail price of £49.99, with the UK listing at £44.99.
The Devilman Crybaby standard edition covers Masaaki Yuasa's 2018 series, his reworking of Go Nagai's manga, across two discs with English and Japanese audio and English subtitles. Clean opening credits are the only extra, and it is rated 18 in region A/B at a suggested £39.99, listed at £29.99. A deluxe edition of the same series remains the pricier option for anyone who wants the packaging; this is the plain disc release.
Where the fourth season sits in the series
To the Top is the season that finally gets Karasuno to the national championship, and it splits its attention between the players who made it there and the ones still chasing a place. Kageyama and Tsukishima are pulled away to an invite-only training camp, the rest of the squad grinds through preparation for nationals, and Hinata, uninvited, turns up at the rookie camp anyway and talks his way onto the sidelines. It is the season where the show's interest in how players improve becomes the main subject rather than a subplot.
Anime Limited has been steadily keeping the series in print in the UK, with the earlier seasons and the Dumpster Battle film already available, so anyone collecting physically now has a complete run rather than a gap where the nationals arc should be.
Our opinion
Physical anime releases live or die on whether the disc does something the stream does not, and this pair shows the two honest answers at either end of the market. Haikyu!! arrives with a real package of extras, the eye-catches and clean songs that fans actually rewatch, and a price that reflects being a current licence. Devilman Crybaby arrives with almost nothing extra at all, and sells on the fact that Yuasa's series looks extraordinary and has never had a cheap UK disc before. Neither is greedy; they are just aimed at different shelves.
The less comfortable observation is that £44.99 for a television season is now normal, and the format's audience has quietly shrunk to the people who will pay it. That is a sustainable business for a distributor but not a growing one, and the fact that the interesting release of the week is two series rather than one tells you the catalogue is being mined steadily. Anyone still buying anime on disc is being served well by it; anyone waiting for physical media to become cheap again should stop waiting.
