Hanako-gari manga ends after one year, with final collected volume due in September

Toshiko Machida’s Hanako-gari has reached its final chapter after roughly a year of publication. Kodansha’s Magazine Pocket platform published the conclusion on 27 August, with the third and final collected volume scheduled for release in Japan on 9 September.

The manga’s short run does not make its premise any less grim: a Tokyo Metropolitan Government organisation claims to search for and protect spirits while secretly hunting and disposing of them.

What's actually going on

Machida launched Hanako-gari, also known as Hanako Hunt, on Magazine Pocket in September 2025. Kodansha released the second compiled volume on 9 March and plans to publish the third and final volume on 9 September.

The story is set in a world where spirits run rampant. Its central organisation presents itself as a protective force, but the truth is that its mission involves tracking down and eliminating the very spirits it claims to safeguard.

The Japanese digital conclusion and collected-volume schedule are the confirmed parts of the announcement. No new English-language licensing or release information was identified in the sources checked.
