Haruhi Suzumiya school opens to fans one final time

The real school that inspired Haruhi Suzumiya’s North High will host its final fan open campus on November 21, but all 1,000 places are already gone.

A real-life school that inspired The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya will open to fans one final time before its name changes after a merger. Nishinomiya Kita High School in Hyogo, Japan, will hold its last public open-campus event on November 21, 2026, according to the school’s official event site and Anime News Network.12

The final open campus

The event will run from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. across four reserved sessions, each capped at 250 guests. The official site says the general application period opened on October 15 and filled its allocation, so the full 1,000-ticket event is already sold out.1

Visitors will be able to walk around the campus and take photographs at locations used as models in the anime. The programme also includes an AR/VR experience recreating anime scenes over the real locations, activities planned by current students and a stamp rally connected to Haruhi-related places.1

The school is closely associated with The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya (涼宮ハルヒの憂鬱), whose fictional North High School was modelled on the campus. The event’s official banner describes it as a one-day opening for Haruhi fans, local residents and North High students, and marks the occasion as the final open-high-school event before the school’s transition.1

Why it is closing

Nishinomiya Kita High School is scheduled to merge with Nishinomiya Kabutoyama High School and become Nishinomiya Kurakuen High School in the 2027 academic year. The new school uses the same campus, but the Kita High name is expected to disappear after current third-year students graduate. Incoming students have already been using the new name since April 2025, according to Anime News Network.2

The November event is therefore more than a fan pilgrimage. It is also a chance to see the real-world setting under its original school identity before the merger formally changes it. Anime News Network reported that the previous open campus in November 2025 was the first time fans could officially enter the school, after years of visiting the area from outside.2

What fans can expect

The event will not reopen general bookings: the school’s own site says all ordinary places have been filled. Fans who missed out can still use the official announcement as a record of the final event and follow the school’s future updates, but should not treat unofficial travel claims or resale offers as an invitation to attend.1

The story also shows why real-world anime locations can matter beyond tourism. The campus is not simply a backdrop borrowed for marketing; it is a functioning school whose timetable, merger and students set the limits of what can be opened to visitors. The final event acknowledges that connection while keeping the visit within a carefully controlled, pre-booked day.

Our opinion

The strongest part of this announcement is its sense of place. A last public visit to the real North High model gives fans a meaningful farewell, but the sold-out booking and the school’s education role should come first. The event works best as a respectful closing chapter for a location that helped make Haruhi’s world feel tangible, not as a permanent theme-park attraction.
