Hirayasumi anime lands New York world premiere on 7 October

Viz Media will give the Hirayasumi anime its world premiere in New York, screening the first episode at Japan Society on 7 October, three months before the series reaches Japanese television. The distributor announced the event on 18 September, describing it as the first public outing for a show that has been quietly assembling itself since the manga began in 2021.

What the premiere actually is

The screening runs at Japan Society in New York City on 7 October at 7:00 p.m. EDT, with composer Kaori Sawada and producer Junichi Katsutani in attendance and Viz Media community manager Godswill Ugwa hosting the panel. The anime is a co-production between Shogakukan-Shueisha Productions and Production +h., and it will premiere in January 2027 on the NHK General channel in Japan. Viz Media has announced an English release for 2027, which makes a Manhattan premiere months ahead of broadcast a fairly confident piece of scheduling.

Who is making it

Kei Suezawa, whose credits include Fate/Grand Order The Movie Divine Realm of the Round Table: Camelot - Wandering; Agateram and FLCL Progressive, is directing at Production +h. Naoyuki Asano, who worked on Urusei Yatsura, Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken! and Mr. Osomatsu, is handling character design. Mika Nishimura (Dead Dead Demon's Dededededestruction, Typhoon Noruda) is art director, and Kaori Sawada (What Did You Eat Yesterday?, When Spring Comes) is composing the music.

Keigo Shinzo launched the original manga in Shogakukan's Weekly Big Comic Spirits magazine in April 2021, and Shogakukan published the ninth collected volume on 30 July. The series has passed 1.1 million copies in circulation worldwide, was nominated for the 15th Manga Taisho awards and the 27th Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize, and ranked 18th in the 2023 Kono Manga ga Sugoi! guidebook. It has already been adapted once, as a live-action series on NHK in November 2025. Viz describes the story as following Hiroto Ikuta, 29, who has no girlfriend, no full-time job and no plan for the future, and could not be happier about it.

Our opinion

The screening is the least interesting part of this announcement. What matters is the bet underneath it: a distributor putting marketing weight behind a manga whose entire argument is that a life without a five-year plan is still a life. Slice-of-life shows do not trend and they rarely get the budget a tournament arc attracts, so a New York premiere months before the Japanese broadcast is a claim that the quiet audience is bigger than the industry's spreadsheets assume. The 1.1 million copies suggest that claim is not wishful thinking. Our note of caution is the 2027 English release with no date attached, because an open-ended window is how enthusiasm gets quietly shelved. For now, though, a January NHK slot and a Manhattan debut is a far stronger start than a show like this usually gets.
