Mairimashita! Iruma-kun: If Episode of Mafia sets January premiere
NHK has set a 4 January 2027 premiere for the 12-episode mafia-themed Iruma-kun spin-off.
The anime Mairimashita! Iruma-kun: If Episode of Mafia will begin broadcasting in Japan on 4 January 2027. NHK has confirmed a Monday night slot on General Television, with the series scheduled to air at 11pm. The announcement also includes a new key visual and character visuals for the dark alternate-world spin-off.
The series is based on the “what if” version of Mairimashita! Iruma-kun (魔入りました!入間くん), which reimagines Iruma and the familiar cast in a mafia-themed setting. Oricon reports that the new anime will run for 12 episodes. The key visual places Iruma at the centre of a group descending a staircase, with the cast presented in a more serious and threatening style than the main television series.
NHK’s announcement confirms the broadcast date and shows the new visual directly. The broadcaster describes the programme as beginning in January 2027, while Oricon identifies the slot as Mondays from 11pm to 11:25pm on NHK General. As with any advance schedule, the final broadcast timetable remains subject to change.
The new setting is more than a cosmetic wardrobe swap. The published visual uses dark suits, dramatic lighting and a tense composition to signal a different tone from the school comedy and fantasy adventure associated with the main series. Iruma remains recognisable, but the surrounding characters are framed as a dangerous crew rather than classmates and rivals.
NHK’s key visual also gives the spin-off a clear identity for viewers who already know the franchise. It shows the central cast together while retaining the character-focused approach used in the original anime’s promotional material. Oricon says both the main visual and character visuals were released alongside the broadcast announcement.
For viewers outside Japan, the announcement confirms the domestic Japanese premiere rather than a streaming date for other territories. No international platform or release window is named in the source material. Any overseas availability will need a separate announcement from the rights holders or a local distributor.
Our opinion
The mafia setting gives this spin-off a useful reason to exist beyond another round of familiar character art. The visual is immediately more dramatic, but it still keeps Iruma at the centre, which should make the alternate version accessible to existing fans. The January premiere is now firm enough to mark in the calendar, while overseas viewers should avoid assuming that the Japanese broadcast automatically comes with a global streaming release.
