Initial D AE86 real car and model meet at Utsunomiya pop-up

A real AE86 and AUTOart's 1/18-scale Project D model are on display together at a limited Initial D pop-up in Utsunomiya.

Initial D fans can compare a real AE86 with AUTOart's 1/18-scale model at a temporary pop-up shop in Utsunomiya, Japan, where the display and sales event runs until November 1. The event brings the car associated with the manga and anime's Project D storyline together with a detailed collector's replica. 12

What the Utsunomiya pop-up includes

CAMSHOP.JP says the shop is on the first floor of FKD Interpark in Utsunomiya, Tochigi Prefecture. Visitors can see a real Toyota Sprinter Trueno AE86 beside AUTOart's 1/18-scale model, making the display a direct comparison between the full-size car and its miniature counterpart. The event also sells officially licensed Initial D goods, clothing, car accessories and other collection items. 1

The pop-up is scheduled to run from October 16 through November 1, although the organiser warns that the display and stock may change and that products can sell out. The same model is also available online through CAMSHOP.JP, so fans outside Tochigi have another way to find it. 13

A Project D replica with working details

The model recreates the tuned AE86 associated with the later Project D section of Initial D. CAMSHOP.JP says its shape was developed from a 3D scan of the real car, with details including a carbon bonnet, lowered suspension and wide eight-spoke wheels. The bonnet, doors and pop-up headlights can be opened, while the engine bay and cabin are finished with additional detail. 13

The model also comes in a special package with a metal plate. That makes the display more than a simple toy release: the Utsunomiya event is designed around seeing how the model's proportions, finish and small mechanical details compare with the real AE86 on display. AnimeAnime.jp's report notes that the event's imagery is illustrative and that the display arrangement or stock may change, so visitors should check availability before travelling. 2

Why this matters to Initial D fans

The appeal here is straightforward. Initial D made the AE86 a recognisable part of car and anime culture, and the pop-up turns that connection into a physical display rather than another product listing. Seeing the real car beside a model based on its Project D design gives collectors a useful sense of scale and lets visitors inspect the features that photographs cannot fully convey.

It is also a timely celebration of the property's 30th anniversary. The event does not announce a new anime adaptation or game; it is a limited retail and exhibition opportunity focused on licensed merchandise and AUTOart's anniversary model. That distinction matters, but for fans who want to see the AE86 in person, the combination of the full-size display and the detailed miniature is the main attraction.

Our opinion

This is the kind of focused anniversary event that makes sense for Initial D: it puts the car itself at the centre and gives visitors something more memorable than a standard merchandise wall. The real AE86 should be the draw, while the AUTOart model adds the collector angle. If you are already planning to be near Utsunomiya, the side-by-side display looks worth a visit; if not, the CAMSHOP.JP listing is the more practical route, but it cannot replace seeing the full-size car beside it.
