Magic Knight Rayearth episode 3 sets up the weapons hunt

Magic Knight Rayearth episode 3 sends Hikaru, Umi and Fuu searching for the special mineral needed to forge their legendary weapons.

Magic Knight Rayearth’s new anime adaptation is heading into its third episode with a practical problem for its three newly summoned heroes: they need the right materials before they can receive the weapons that will let them fight for Cephiro.

The weapons hunt begins

The episode is titled “Fateful Companions” in English, or “Unmei Kyoudoutai” (運命共同体) in Japanese. According to Oricon’s preview, Hikaru Shidou, Umi Ryuuzaki and Fuu Hououji meet the weaponsmith Presea and the mysterious creature Mokona in the Silent Forest. Presea explains that her role is to create the finest weapons for the Magic Knights, but the process requires a special mineral that the trio must find first.

Mokona leads the girls towards the material they need, although the preview stops short of revealing what awaits them. That gives episode 3 a clear shape: rather than simply presenting the heroes with upgraded equipment, the story is making them earn the tools they will need for the wider journey through Cephiro.

A modern return for a CLAMP classic

The new series adapts CLAMP’s fantasy manga Magic Knight Rayearth (魔法騎士レイアース), which originally ran in Nakayoshi between 1993 and 1995. The earlier television anime followed Hikaru, Umi and Fuu after they were pulled from a school trip to Tokyo Tower into the other world of Cephiro. They were summoned by Princess Emeraude and asked to become the legendary Magic Knights, rescuing her from captivity and restoring the world’s balance.

The 2026 adaptation is revisiting that foundation for a new television audience while keeping the central trio and Cephiro’s fantasy premise intact. The official Crunchyroll trailer presents the three characters together in their early armour, with the title’s colour-coded visual identity and magical setting still prominent.

Oricon’s preview also confirms that episode 3 will include advance cuts and a promotional video alongside its synopsis. Those materials point towards a story that is still establishing the rules of Cephiro, the role of its supporting characters and the demands placed on the three Magic Knights before the larger conflict takes over.

Our opinion

This is a useful early episode for Magic Knight Rayearth because the weapons quest gives the remake a chance to slow down and make its fantasy mechanics matter. Presea’s explanation turns the weapons into part of the world’s craft and history, rather than a convenient upgrade dropped into the heroes’ hands. Mokona’s guidance also keeps the episode connected to the stranger, more playful side of the setting.

The material hunt is not a huge plot twist, but it is exactly the sort of foundation-building a remake needs. If episode 3 gives the special mineral and Presea’s work enough texture, the Magic Knights’ eventual battles should feel like a consequence of their journey through Cephiro rather than a sequence of disconnected set pieces.

Magic Knight Rayearth episode 3 airs in Japan on Wednesday, 21 October 2026, according to the broadcast schedule cited by Oricon. The preview promises the next small step in the trio’s transformation from surprised visitors into heroes who can actually protect the world they have been asked to save.
