The manga Moscow 2160 is heading towards its final volume, with Amazon Japan listing volume five as the end of Kumo Kagyu and Kōtarō Sekine's cyberpunk series. The listing gives a 25 December release date for the book in Japan.1

What we know

The series launched in Square Enix's Monthly Big Gangan in December 2022. Its near-future setting imagines a Soviet Union where the Cold War has lasted for two centuries, while cyborg criminals and state conspiracies shape life in a northern Moscow stripped of freedom and truth.2

The central character is Danila Kragyn, a lone "Janitor" carrying antique machine guns and working outside the major factions. The official Square Enix series page also identifies Stasha, described as Danila's partner, and frames the story as a cyberpunk tale about shooting through a miserable future.2

The fifth volume's listing makes the ending clear, but it does not yet provide a detailed account of the final chapter or explain whether the Japanese release will coincide with any further announcements. Square Enix's series page currently lists volume four as the latest volume already released, while Amazon's listing points to volume five as the concluding book.12

Yen Press publishes Moscow 2160 in English and describes the series as a divergent-history story of an intact Soviet Union, long-running Cold War and a city where the population's rights have been lost.3 The English publisher's page currently foregrounds the first volume, so readers should not assume that the Japanese volume-five date is also an English-language release date.

Our opinion

A planned ending at five volumes gives Moscow 2160 a useful sense of shape. Its premise is built around a world that has been stuck in a historical dead end for generations, so a defined endpoint feels more fitting than letting the setting drift indefinitely. The caveat is that a listing is not the same thing as a full publisher announcement: until Square Enix publishes more detail, the safest reading is that volume five is scheduled as the finale rather than treating every plot question as answered.

For now, the meaningful news is simple: Moscow 2160 appears to have one more Japanese volume left, with 25 December currently attached to it. Any English release timing will need separate confirmation from Yen Press.
