A new non-verbal Naruto live show has revealed its Team 7 key visual and character visuals for Naruto, Sasuke, Sakura and Kakashi.

Anime Corner reports that the production will tell its story without spoken dialogue, using physical performance, action and acrobatics to recreate the world of Masashi Kishimoto’s ninja epic.

What’s actually going on

The show will combine traditional kabuki theatre techniques with projection mapping, illusions and stage mechanisms to represent Naruto’s ninjutsu. Go Ueki directs, with Shinjiro Kameda handling composition and Neil Dorward serving as international creative consultant.

The production committee is presenting the show as both a new theatrical interpretation of Naruto and a tourism attraction in Kyoto. Its dialogue-free format puts movement, staging and visual effects ahead of conventional spoken scenes.

Why you should care

A franchise built around hand signs, transformations and spectacular battles is a natural fit for physical theatre. The interesting question is whether the show can make Naruto’s emotional relationships land without relying on dialogue.

Our opinion

A silent Naruto show sounds bizarre in exactly the right way. If the acrobatics and stagecraft are given room to breathe, this could be a genuinely inventive way to revisit Team 7 rather than another straightforward retelling.
