One Piece Shinkansen car 8 becomes a NEXT GEAR play space
Car 8 of the anime-themed Sanyo Shinkansen sets is being rebuilt with a photo booth, wall illustrations and hidden stickers, with the first NEXT GEAR departure due in December.

The One Piece Shinkansen is getting a fourth interior. Car 8 of one of the three themed Sanyo Shinkansen sets will be stripped out and rebuilt as a “NEXT GEAR” carriage that enters service from December 2026, the project's own news page said on 28 September.
On the mountain side, the rebuilt car replaces rows of ordinary seats with a “seat photo booth”, where passengers can sit next to figures of Monkey D. Luffy and Tony Tony Chopper and take photographs. The sea-side wall carries newly drawn One Piece illustrations, while the remaining seating bays get decorated floors and hidden stickers. Taken together it is less a carriage than a walk-through space that happens to travel at 285kph.
Three sets, three versions
The collaboration has run three themed formations on the Sanyo Shinkansen between Shin-Osaka and Hakata since April 2025: Setouchi Blue, Tony Tony Chopper and Monkey D. Luffy. The rebuild follows the same three concepts, which means a finished car 8 will differ depending on which set it is fitted to, and passengers will get a different room depending on which departure they book.
The treasure rally opens in October
Promotion starts earlier than the hardware. A digital stamp rally called the ONE PIECE Shinkansen TREASURE RALLY opens on 1 October 2026, with prizes that include invitations to a preview viewing of the rebuilt car before it carries fare-paying passengers. The first NEXT GEAR carriage is due to debut in December, with the rest of the sets following.
Our opinion
Japan's character trains are usually billboards with seats, and the good ones are judged on how much of the interior they are willing to give up. Rebuilding one car per set is the shrewd version: it creates a single photogenic room the railway can sell a specific departure on, it costs a fraction of a full re-wrap, and it leaves the rest of the train doing its ordinary job. The stamp rally is the part that will decide whether this lands — a prize draw for a preview is a neat way to turn a rolling advertisement into something people enter rather than merely pass through.
