Psyren anime reveals cast and October premiere

Psyren is heading for the screen with a new cast reveal, a fresh opening theme and an October premiere date — giving Toshiaki Iwashiro’s long-running manga adaptation a proper launch window.

Anime News Network reports that the staff revealed the details in a new video, including the October debut, the opening theme artist and a new key visual.

What's actually going on

Yūko Kaida joins the cast as Matsuri Yagumo, while Nobuyuki Hiyama plays Dolkey. CLAN QUEEN performs the opening theme song, “Warning!!”.

The television anime is scheduled to debut on Tokyo MX and BS11 on 4 October at 11 p.m., before airing later that evening on Sun TV, according to the announcement. An English-subtitled version of the new promotional video is available from the official Sony Music AnimeSongs YouTube channel.

The series adapts Iwashiro’s Psyren manga, which follows Ageha Yoshina after he becomes involved with a mysterious telephone card and a dangerous alternate world. The new cast additions give the adaptation a little more shape before it arrives this autumn.

Why you should care

A new key visual is not exactly the loudest news in the anime calendar, but the combination of a firm premiere date, named theme-song artist and additional cast makes this a more useful update than another vague “coming soon” tease.

Psyren also has the advantage of arriving with a complete manga story behind it, giving the production a chance to build a focused adaptation rather than inventing momentum one promotional video at a time. Whether it can turn the source material’s strange-world hook into a compelling television series is the question.

Our opinion

This is one to keep on the autumn watchlist. The October premiere is concrete, the cast is filling out and CLAN QUEEN’s theme gives the show a distinct musical identity before episode one. Psyren still needs to prove it can make its sprawling premise work on screen, but this is a much healthier update than a poster and a prayer.
