The The Detective Is Already Dead light novels are heading towards their conclusion, with author Nigozyu saying the series is planned to end with its 15th volume. The announcement appeared in the 14th volume, which Kadokawa released on Friday, according to Anime News Network 1.
The series, also known by its Japanese title Tantei wa Mō, Shindeiru. (探偵はもう、死んでいる。), follows Kimihiko Kimizuka, a trouble magnet who becomes the assistant to Siesta, a brilliant detective fighting an organisation of pseudohumans. The central mystery begins after their partnership ends, giving the story its deliberately dramatic title 1.
Yen Press publishes the novels in English. Its English release is currently behind the Japanese edition: the 12th volume shipped on August 11, while the Japanese series has reached volume 14. That means readers following the official translation should expect the ending to arrive later than readers of the original novels 1.
The announcement lands as the television adaptation is back in the spotlight. Season 2 premiered on October 7, and Crunchyroll is streaming the new episodes as they air. Crunchyroll’s official Season 2 trailer presents Siesta and the returning mystery at the centre of the promotional campaign 2.
The novels have also expanded beyond the main series. Hoko Hinachi and Minori Chigusa launched the spinoff Charlotte wa Tada, Jiken o Tokitai. Tantei wa Mō, Shindeiru. Code:RED in 2024, with Nigozyu credited for the original work and supervision. The manga adaptation of the main novels, drawn by Mugiko, concluded in 2023 after six collected volumes 1.
What happens next
Nigozyu’s wording describes a plan to end the novels with volume 15 rather than a publication date, so the final release timing has not been announced. For now, the immediate way to follow the franchise is Season 2, while Yen Press continues working through the English novels.

Ending a long-running light-novel mystery with a clearly signposted final volume is a welcome bit of certainty. The Detective Is Already Dead has spent years growing from a partnership between Kimihiko and Siesta into a wider story involving pseudohumans, multiple adaptations and a spinoff. A 15th-volume finish gives Nigozyu room to resolve that central story without leaving readers guessing whether another arc is quietly being set up. The important caveat is that “planned to end” is not the same as a confirmed release date, so the conclusion is on the horizon rather than immediately here.
