Witch and Mercenary books NTV's network for April 2027

The television anime of Kaeru Chōhōkiteki's Witch and Mercenary will premiere in April 2027. Bandai Namco Filmworks confirmed the date alongside the series' first full promotional video, a second teaser visual and three additions to the cast, with the show arriving on NTV and 29 affiliated channels as well as the satellite channel BS NTV.

Yuri Noguchi joins as Isana Gihon, a rank-two swordmaster nicknamed Snow White. Hiromu Mineta plays Alan Clows, a rank-four swordmaster who leads his party, and Haruka Shiraishi is Elicia Armel, a rank-three adventurer who fights with a staff. All three line up beside the previously announced Saori Hayami as the witch Siasha and Taito Ban as the mercenary Zig Crane.

A proven team on both sides of the camera

Shinpei Ezaki, whose credits include Vivy: Fluorite Eye's Song and Hanebad!, is directing at 8-Bit. Taishirou Tanimura is handling series scripts, Keita Matsumoto designed the characters, Akiko Fujita is the sound director and Rei Ishizuka is composing the score at Lantis.

The newly announced staff include Shingo Irie as assistant series script supervisor, Hideki Sakai on sub-character design, Wataru Inada and Ryō Hirada on monster design, Kazuhiro Inoue as art director and Keita Matsumoto, Hideki Sakai and Sorato Shimizu sharing chief animation director duties. Fūma Aizawa takes the CG director role and Gō Sadamatsu is editing.

A web novel that already has an English shelf

The series began as a web novel, serialised by Chōhōkiteki on Shōsetsuka ni Narō between June 2021 and December 2022. Micro Magazine published the first print volume, illustrated by Bench Kanase, in May 2023. Volume seven followed on 20 January and volume eight is due on 24 September. Makoto Miyagi's manga adaptation launched on Kodansha's Magazine Pocket app in January 2024, and both the novels, through Seven Seas Entertainment, and the manga, through Kodansha's K MANGA, are published in English.

Witch and Mercenary turns on a witch hunted for what she is rather than anything she has done, and the mercenary who throws his lot in with her as the pair search for somewhere she can live unbothered. The mismatch is the hook: Siasha is the most dangerous thing in the room and Zig is the man paid to keep her alive long enough to find out whether that is true.

Our opinion

NTV handing a web-novel adaptation a slot across its 30-station network tells you where Japanese television now thinks the audience lives. Witch and Mercenary arrives with its English-language groundwork already poured: Seven Seas has the light novels, Kodansha has the manga running on K MANGA, and the story has been readable in English for years. A simulcast audience is therefore a known quantity rather than a bet, which is exactly the sort of certainty a broadcaster wants before it commits a nationwide launch to a first-season fantasy.

The risk sits in the same place as the advantage. Plenty of the people who will be asked to care in April 2027 have known Siasha and Zig for years, and the trailer's real job is not to sell the premise but to prove the animation can match what readers already have in their heads. Ezaki's record on stylised action is the reassurance here, and the source material is short enough, at seven volumes, that the production has a clean, finite story to adapt rather than an ongoing web novel it has to chase.
