A Certain Item of Dark Side gets new key visual

A Certain Item of Dark Side has unveiled a new key visual ahead of its 9 October 2026 premiere, putting Academy City’s most dangerous covert squad back in the spotlight.

Anime Corner reports that the visual features the four central members of ITEM, the underground organisation operating on the darker side of Academy City. The update follows the anime’s earlier trailer, which introduced the cast and its theme songs.

What's actually going on

The series is a spin-off of the wider A Certain franchise and focuses on ITEM, a group of high-level espers who carry out covert missions for Academy City’s ruling powers. Its core team is led by Shizuri Mugino, alongside Riko Takitsubo, Frenda Seivelun and Saiai Kinuhata.

Tatsuyuki Nagai returns as director, with Shigeki Kimoto handling character design, Maiko Iuchi composing the music and J.C. STAFF producing the animation. Those are familiar names for followers of the franchise, which is either reassuring or a warning that Academy City still has absolutely no adult supervision.

The opening theme, “Ghost Sequence”, is performed by East Of Eden as the band’s first anime tie-in. Kishida Kyoudan & The Akeboshi Rockets perform the ending theme, “Meltdowner”; both songs can be heard in the previously released trailer, according to Anime Corner.

Why you should care

ITEM has always been one of the more compelling corners of the A Certain universe because its missions sit well away from the cleaner heroic framing of the main stories. The new anime has a ready-made cast dynamic: four powerful characters, one very questionable employer and plenty of room for loyalties to become complicated.

The key visual itself is not a major plot reveal, but it confirms that the production is moving towards its October debut rather than hiding in the franchise’s increasingly crowded shadows. Existing fans get a focused return to ITEM, while newcomers have a team-based supernatural thriller to investigate without needing to memorise every single Academy City conspiracy first.

Our opinion

This is a promising use of the A Certain universe. ITEM has the sharper edge and messier chemistry that can make a spin-off feel worthwhile rather than merely another logo on the franchise conveyor belt. Keep A Certain Item of Dark Side on the autumn watchlist: the October 9 premiere has our attention, even if Academy City’s ethics department remains conspicuously absent.
