Are You a Landmine, Chihara-san? anime unveils Melancholic single

Are You a Landmine, Chihara-san? has released its fourth digital single, “Melancholic”, ahead of the anime’s January 2027 debut.

The upcoming TV anime Are You a Landmine, Chihara-san? has released “Melancholic”, the fourth digital single from its music project, giving fans another early listen before the series arrives in Japan on January 7, 2027.1

The track was released digitally on October 25 alongside an official music video on KING AMUSEMENT CREATIVE’s YouTube channel. It features Mai Chihara, the character voiced by Sayumi Suzushiro, and brings a familiar Vocaloid song into the anime’s music programme. “Melancholic” was originally created by Junky in 2010 and featured Rin Kagamine.1

The Melancholic release

The single is part of the production’s wider effort to establish Mai before the television premiere. The AnimeTV report identifies Sayumi Suzushiro as Mai’s voice, with Kazuki Ura playing Kuroki, Maaya Uchida playing Chinatsu Iwakura, Tomokazu Sugita playing Hibiya, and Daisuke Ono playing Kazami.1

SynergySP is animating the series, with Yasuaki Fujii directing, Keiichiro Ochi handling series composition and Majiro designing the characters. Alisa Okehazama is credited with the music. The new song therefore arrives with the anime’s musical identity taking shape well ahead of its broadcast date.1

A rom-com built on wrong impressions

The story follows high-school student Kuroki after he is seated beside Mai, a girl whose gothic fashion and intense stare have earned her the unfair “landmine” label. That term refers to the jirai-kei aesthetic, a dark, hyper-feminine style often associated with unstable or yandere-coded characters. The premise promises to question those assumptions rather than simply repeat them.1

Kuroki gradually discovers that Mai is not as volatile as the rumours suggest. The setup leaves room for a softer slice-of-life romantic comedy, with the music releases acting as a way to introduce Mai’s personality before viewers meet her in the full series.1

Our opinion

A fourth digital single is a useful sign that Are You a Landmine, Chihara-san? is treating its music as part of the character work rather than background decoration. Reworking a recognisable Vocaloid song also gives the project an immediate musical hook, while Mai’s visual identity is already clear in the promotional artwork. The real test will be whether the show gives her more depth than the label attached to her by other characters. For now, “Melancholic” makes this an anime worth keeping on the radar before its January debut.
