Comic Seymour remains offline after suspected unauthorised access, with operator NTT Solmare unable to give customers a restart date.

Comic Seymour, one of Japan's major digital manga storefronts, remains offline with no restart date in sight after its operator reported suspected unauthorised access and a possible leak of some customer information. NTT Solmare said on 18 October that it still could not give users an accurate timetable for restoring the service. 12

What happened

The Comic Seymour service was taken offline for emergency maintenance at 11:30 a.m. on 15 October. The operator said the shutdown followed unauthorised access by a third party and the discovery that some members' information may have been exposed. 1

In a notice reproduced by Oricon, NTT Solmare apologised to customers and said the investigation and recovery work were continuing. The latest update did not provide a firm estimate for when the store, its reading services or related account functions would return. 1

The outage means customers cannot rely on the storefront for normal access while the investigation continues. The available reporting does not identify the attacker, explain the entry route or set out the full scope of any information exposure. Those details matter, because an unavailable shop and a confirmed data breach are not necessarily the same thing — the operator has described the access as unauthorised and reported a possible leak, but has not published a complete forensic account. 12

What customers should know

Comic Seymour's public homepage is currently showing a service-suspension message asking users to wait while recovery work is carried out. It does not give a restoration time. 2

Customers should be wary of messages claiming to offer emergency account recovery, refunds or alternative access while the investigation is active. They should use only notices from Comic Seymour or NTT Solmare, avoid reusing passwords elsewhere and monitor accounts that share the same email address or credentials. Those are sensible precautions while the operator has not yet published its full findings, not evidence that a wider compromise has been confirmed.

The outage also leaves a practical question for manga readers: even after the storefront returns, NTT Solmare may need to explain whether accounts, purchase histories, payment details or reading libraries were affected. The current notices do not answer those points, so readers should not assume that every customer record was exposed — or that none was — until the investigation produces a clearer account. 12

Our opinion

A service suspension without a recovery estimate is frustrating, but the more important issue is clarity about the suspected breach. NTT Solmare should publish a plain-English incident timeline, identify the categories of information involved and tell customers what action is required as soon as those facts are established. Until then, the safest reading is the narrow one: Comic Seymour is offline, unauthorised access has been reported and the investigation is still incomplete. 12
