The Failure at God School is getting a TV anime

The manga about a school for gods is getting an anime. A new official site opened on 17 September to confirm that The Failure at God School — Kami-sama Gakkō no Ochikobore — is being adapted for television, and it arrived with a teaser visual and congratulatory comments and artwork from both creators.

The manga is written by Hyuganatsu, the author behind The Apothecary Diaries, and drawn by Modomu Akagawara, whose previous series Ani Tomo was also published in English by Yen Press. The pair launched it in Hakusensha's Hana to Yume magazine in August 2021, and the 15th collected volume went on sale the same week as the anime announcement.

What is *The Failure at God School* about?

It is a supernatural school story with a bureaucratic twist. In its version of modern Japan, people with mysterious powers are classified, licensed and educated at special schools, and only those with full certification are allowed to call themselves gods. Nagi, a perfectly ordinary high schooler, receives an acceptance letter for the elite Kannagara Academy, cannot even identify her own power and is branded a failure almost immediately. The high-ranking god Tsukuyomi-no-Mikoto, however, senses something in her worth watching.

Yen Press publishes the series in English and describes it as a world where modern problems get modern solutions, including a government classification system for the supernaturally gifted. The manga has also been adapted into a novel series, which began in Japan in January 2022 and has reached five volumes.

Is there a release date or a studio for the anime?

Not yet. The official site carries the teaser visual and the creators' comments but no broadcast window, studio, staff or cast list. Expect those details to arrive in stages, the way they usually do for a Japanese television anime announced this far from its premiere.

Our opinion

Hyuganatsu has already proved that slow-burn intrigue about institutions and the people crushed by them can carry an anime, and this setup is a sharper-edged version of that instinct: gods as a licensed profession, schools as gatekeepers, and a teenager who fails the entrance exam for divinity. That is more interesting than the sum of its parts, because the manga's real subject is credentialism, and the genre is full of shows that gesture at the idea without committing to it. The risk is tone. Play this as a straight power-fantasy and you lose the bureaucratic chill that makes the premise work; play it as a comedy of manners with supernatural paperwork and it could be genuinely distinctive. Casting Tsukuyomi-no-Mikoto as the one who spots something in the failure is the right instinct, and the announcement campaign already looks confident. As ever with a teaser and no studio attached, the sentence to keep in mind is: promising, unproven, watching.
