Madoka Magica and Witch on the Holy Night are joining forces for a Japanese cinema campaign, with Shaft and ufotable contributing a new collaboration visual. Aniplex has also released a promotional video for the team-up. 123

A two-film campaign

The campaign links screenings of Puella Magi Madoka Magica the Movie: Walpurgisnacht Rising with advance tickets for Witch on the Holy Night. Viewers who see Walpurgisnacht Rising between October 14 and November 6 and hold a Mubichike ticket for Witch on the Holy Night can enter a poster campaign running until November 9. 1

The collaboration visual brings together Shaft’s Madoka Magica film and ufotable’s theatrical adaptation of the visual novel. A banner is scheduled to appear at Shinjuku Wald 9 from October 17 to October 29, with B5 flyers also planned for selected events while supplies last. 12

The Aniplex video presents Madoka Magica and Witch on the Holy Night together, while the films remain separate productions. Witch on the Holy Night is scheduled to open in Japan on November 20, and Walpurgisnacht Rising continues the Madoka Magica story more than a decade after Rebellion. 13

Our opinion

This is a neat collaboration because it connects two major Japanese animation projects through a concrete cinema promotion rather than a vague crossover tease. The poster campaign is currently Japan-only, but the new Shaft-and-ufotable visual gives fans a worthwhile piece of shared artwork even if they cannot take part in the ticket promotion. The November release of Witch on the Holy Night is the bigger long-term story; this campaign is a smart bit of connective tissue ahead of it.
