McDonald's and USJ bring All-Stars toys to Happy Set

The Universal Studios Japan collaboration includes ten Minions, Hello Kitty, film and theme-park toys across three October waves.

McDonald's has launched a new Happy Set collaboration with Universal Studios Japan, bringing ten character toys to participating restaurants in three waves. The USJ All-Stars range includes Minions, Hello Kitty, Curious George, Jaws, Jurassic World, Kuromi and Back to the Future-themed toys. 1

The first wave is available from 16 October to 22 October, followed by a second wave from 23 October to 29 October. A third wave begins on 30 October and includes toys from the full collection, although individual items depend on availability. McDonald's warns that customers cannot choose a specific toy and that stock may run out. 1

The ten toys

The first five toys are a Minion-themed ride car, a Hello Kitty cupcake container, a Curious George toy, a Jaws tooth-shaped stamp and a Back to the Future double-door car. The second wave adds a Minion Halloween bucket, a Minion vampire keyring, a Curious George pumpkin toy, a Jurassic World surprise box and a Kuromi wristband. 1

The campaign marks Universal Studios Japan's 25th anniversary. McDonald's official campaign page shows the toys together in a promotional image, while the same page links to a toy introduction video and a television commercial. The range is less a single anime tie-in than a broad pop-culture collection spanning animated characters, film properties and USJ attractions. 1

The collaboration is listed on McDonald's Japan's Happy Set pages, with the toys available while supplies last. The official notice also says that older Happy Set toys may be substituted if the advertised items sell out. 1

Our opinion

The appeal here is the deliberately mixed line-up. Minions and Hello Kitty provide the instantly recognisable centre of gravity, while Jaws, Jurassic World and Back to the Future give the collection a nostalgic film-and-theme-park angle. That makes the campaign more interesting than a single-character promotion, but it also means availability will matter: the random-toy system makes the complete ten-piece set difficult to collect without repeat visits or trading. The USJ All-Stars Happy Set is available in Japan from 16 October, with later waves scheduled through 30 October. 1
