Sailor Moon gets her first USJ ride in December 2026
Universal Cool Japan 2027 opens on 2 December with Sailor Moon back at Universal Studios Japan, a returning 4-D theatre show and the franchise's first ride attraction.
Sailor Moon is going back to Universal Studios Japan, and this time she is on the ride rather than in a seat. Universal Cool Japan 2027 opens at the Osaka park on 2 December 2026, and the first lineup announced for the event is a fourth Sailor Moon collaboration, timed to the park's 25th anniversary year.
What Universal has confirmed
Two attractions are locked in, both running from 2 December 2026 to 5 April 2027. The returning one is Sailor Moon the Miracle 4-D: Moon Palace Chapter Deluxe at the Cinema 4-D Theatre, a theatre show that Universal describes as mixing 3D film with environmental effects so that guests feel wrapped inside the scene. Universal says it played to strong reactions when it last ran and travelled to its park in the United States in April 2026.
The new one is the Sailor Moon Story Ride at Hollywood Dream - The Ride, which Universal bills as the franchise's first ride attraction at the park. Story Rides put characters in your ear as the coaster runs, and Universal says the ride's story and the accompanying goods will be detailed later.
The 4-D show's story
Guests are welcomed to a ball at the Moon Palace before an enemy closes in on the Legendary Silver Crystal, leaving Sailor Moon cornered and in need of nine Sailor Guardians and the guest to turn the fight around. It is a well-worn magical girl premise, which is rather the point of a 4-D theatre: the transformation sequence and the ballroom are the attraction, not the plot.
Food, goods and what comes next
Original food and merchandise are part of the package, as they are at every Universal Cool Japan, and Universal has not yet given dates for either. Nor has it named the rest of the 2027 lineup, saying only that more collaborations with popular franchises will be announced. Tickets go on sale two months before the visit date, through the park's own store.
Why Sailor Moon keeps coming back
Naoko Takeuchi's manga began serialising in Kodansha's Nakayoshi in 1991, the original books have been translated into 20 languages and the animation has run in more than 40 countries. Universal is marking its fourth Sailor Moon collaboration, after 2018, 2019 and 2022, which makes the franchise one of the park's most reliable returning partners and not a nostalgia booking.
Our opinion
The interesting detail in this announcement is the shape of the ride, not the franchise attached to it. A 4-D theatre show was always going to work, because the transformation sequence is built for surround sound and a water spray, and Universal has already proved that twice in Osaka and once in Florida. Putting Sailor Moon on Hollywood Dream is a different bet, since a coaster with characters talking into your ear has to deliver the drama in about ninety seconds with no screen to hide behind. Universal is holding the details until later, which is either confidence or a work in progress. Either way, the first ride attraction is the part of this to watch, and the food and goods that follow are the part regulars already know will sell out.
