Fullmetal Alchemist returns to Universal Studios Japan in 2027
Universal Studios Japan will bring Fullmetal Alchemist back for a limited programme alongside Yomi no Tsugai at Universal Cool Japan 2027.
Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood is returning to Universal Studios Japan for the first time in 22 years, with a new limited-time programme planned for spring 2027. The collaboration will run alongside the first Universal Studios Japan partnership for Yomi no Tsugai at the Universal Cool Japan 2027 event.1
Universal Studios Japan announced the two anime collaborations on 28 October, according to Oricon News. The park says the programme will recreate the worlds of both series as large-scale, ultra-real entertainment, although the attraction formats, merchandise and food offerings have not yet been detailed.1
A 22-year wait for Fullmetal Alchemist
The Fullmetal Alchemist partnership follows the franchise's 2005 Fullmetal Alchemist Premier Tour. This will be the second collaboration between the series and Universal Studios Japan, and the first in 22 years. The announcement ties the return to the property's 25th anniversary, giving the park a recognisable legacy series for the 2027 event.1
The campaign image supplied to Oricon shows Edward Elric in front of Alphonse Elric and the Universal Studios globe. It is a clear visual marker for the collaboration, rather than a generic image from the wider anime catalogue. The artwork is credited to Universal Studios Japan in Oricon's report.12
Yomi no Tsugai joins the line-up
Yomi no Tsugai is set to receive its first theme-park collaboration. Oricon describes the series as following twins Yuru and Asa through a mystery involving the boundary between night and day, with characters who command tsugai in battles. The park says that world will become part of the event's new entertainment programme alongside Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood.1
Universal Cool Japan 2027 will also feature Sailor Moon, The Apothecary Diaries and Detective Conan, bringing five Japanese entertainment properties together across the event. Universal Studios Japan says further information about attractions, goods and food will be released in stages, so visitors do not yet have a complete schedule or ticketing picture.1
The current announcement places the collaborations in spring 2027, while the wider event is due to begin its sequential programme from 2 December. The source does not specify the exact opening day for either anime collaboration, nor does it say how long each limited-time programme will run.1
Our opinion
Bringing Fullmetal Alchemist back after 22 years gives Universal Studios Japan an obvious nostalgia hook, but pairing it with Yomi no Tsugai keeps the announcement from being only a retrospective. The idea is promising on paper; the eventual attractions will need to show what ultra-real means in practice rather than relying on familiar logos and character costumes.
For now, this is a confirmed collaboration announcement rather than a full attraction reveal. Universal Studios Japan has named the properties and the spring 2027 window, while the practical details fans will need are still to come.1
