Kochikame returns in 2027 with a new cast for its 50th-anniversary anime

The long-running Japanese comedy Kochikame is getting a new television anime in 2027, with the official project revealing its new voice cast, core staff and a first character video. The announcement brings Kankichi Ryotsu and the police box crew back for the series’ 50th-anniversary project.

The official site names Fuku Ochiai as Kankichi Ryotsu, Shōta Aoi as Keiichi Nakagawa, M.A.O as Reiko Akimoto and Raitō Sakamoto as Daijirō Ohara. They take over the central roles for the new production, rather than simply reusing the original television cast.

The series is based on Osamu Akimoto’s long-running manga, published by Shueisha. The new anime will be directed by Ei Aoki, with scripts from Shūichi Kamiyama and Yukinori Fukushima, character design and chief animation direction by Kenichi Hara, and animation production from Gallop.

The official announcement currently gives 2027 as the broadcast year on Fuji TV, with distribution on multiple platforms. It does not yet provide a more precise premiere date or a complete streaming-service list, so those details remain to be confirmed.

A familiar police box, a fresh line-up

That combination of familiar characters and a new cast is the hook. Ryotsu’s chaotic schemes, Nakagawa’s polished composure, Reiko’s sharp authority and Ohara’s exasperation are the basic chemistry that makes the police station work. The character PV offers the first chance to hear how the new performers are shaping those relationships.

The production is also keeping a visual link to the franchise’s established identity. The key visual and official promotional material foreground the police box and its recognisable ensemble, while the staff list brings back Gallop, the studio associated with the earlier television anime.

For international viewers, the announcement is still light on availability. Fuji TV and “each platform” are confirmed in the Japanese announcement, but overseas rights, subtitles and dubbed versions have not been detailed. That matters for a revival whose appeal extends well beyond its domestic broadcast history.

Our opinion

A Kochikame revival is a smart anniversary play because the format does not need a complicated mythology to work: put Ryotsu back in the police box, give him an outrageous shortcut to wealth and let the rest of the cast try to stop the damage. The new voices are a meaningful change, but the early material suggests the project understands that the ensemble is the star.

We are intrigued rather than ready to declare a comeback classic. The 2027 window, full episode format, international distribution and how closely the new animation captures the manga’s everyday slapstick are still unknown. For now, the first cast reveal has done its job: it has made one of Japan’s most durable comedy anime worth watching again.
