Nike is turning One Piece's Devil Fruits into trainers — and Japan's getting first bite
One Piece and Nike have announced a Devil Fruit collection: three Air Max Plus colourways plus apparel, Japan-first pop-ups in September, and a global rollout trailing behind.

One Piece and Nike have finally made it official: a full collaboration collection built around three Devil Fruit-themed Air Max Plus colourways, plus jerseys, tees and caps. If you're not in Japan, though, you'll be watching from the dock for a while.
The announcement landed Aug. 23 via the official One Piece site, with three Air Max Plus designs inspired by the franchise's most famous cursed fruit: the Gum-Gum Fruit that turned rubber-bodied protagonist Monkey D. Luffy into a walking bungee cord, the Flame-Flame Fruit that gave Ace (and later Sabo) fire-manipulation powers, and the Op-Op Fruit that lets surgeon-turned-pirate Trafalgar Law rearrange anything inside a glowing operating room like a medical Dr. Frankenstein.
For the uninitiated: Devil Fruits are One Piece's magic system. Eat one, gain a bizarre superpower, lose the ability to swim — a genuinely terrible trade for a series about pirates, which is exactly why fans adore it. Nike has mapped each fruit onto a colourway: purple and green for Gum-Gum, blaze orange for Flame-Flame, and berry-and-jade for Op-Op.
It's a genuinely sensible silhouette choice. The Air Max Plus, born in 1998, is famous for its TPU cage upper and gradient colour-blocking — essentially a shoe that already looks like it ate a strange fruit. Of the major anime-to-sneaker deals, this lands a clear step above One Piece's previous footwear flings with Vans, Puma and, somewhat infamously, Crocs.
Here's the catch, and it's a big one. The launch is Japan-first, and Japan-first in the most Nike way possible. A pop-up called Dr B's Research Lab runs Sept. 4–6 at Harajuku Quest in Shibuya, followed by Nike Umeda in Osaka on Sept. 12 — but entry and purchases go through a lottery, and applications close Aug. 26 at 23:59 Japan time. That's a window of roughly 72 hours from announcement to deadline, which is less a launch strategy and more a stress test of fan devotion.
The wider rollout is a bureaucratic obstacle course of its own. SneakerFiles reports the pairs will retail for $180 via Nike's SNKRS app and select boutiques this autumn, with the Gum-Gum colourway gated behind a SNKRS voting process running Aug. 23 to Sept. 18 — vote, get picked, then enter a pre-order draw on Sept. 25. Korea gets exclusive access Sept. 25; China, Mexico and Australia get a traditional release. Europe and the US? Fall 2026, unofficially, with no confirmed date. Treat any specific date you see floating around social media with a barrel of salt.
The verdict: the collection itself is a rare anime collab that doesn't feel like a cash-grab — the source material maps onto the product with actual thought. But Nike has wrapped it in lotteries, votes and regional staggering, so the scarcity is entirely homemade. If you're outside Japan and want a pair at retail: get your SNKRS account in order now, and prepare for disappointment with naval discipline.
