Patlabor EZY gets a novelisation in 2027

Fantasia Bunko says Patlabor EZY will receive a novelisation in 2027, with Toshihiko Tsukiji writing and Akemi Takada illustrating the cover.

Fantasia Bunko has announced that Patlabor EZY (機動警察パトレイバー EZY) will receive a novelisation in 2027. Toshihiko Tsukiji, known for the Maburaho and Kämpfer novels, is writing the adaptation, while longtime Patlabor character designer Akemi Takada is illustrating its cover, according to the publisher’s announcement and Anime News Network’s report.12

The announcement adds a new literary strand to an anime project already being released as a theatrical series. Patlabor EZY consists of eight episodes divided across three films. The first two films opened in Japan in May and August 2026, while File 3 is scheduled for 5 March 2027 and will contain the final two episodes as a two-part story.2

The project moves the setting into the 2030s, where Japan is dealing with labour shortages and wider automation. Labors — the piloted robots that once represented cutting-edge tools for manual work — are increasingly being replaced by autonomous machines, although the Special Vehicle Section 2 team continues to handle Labor-related crimes with updated versions of its familiar Ingrams.2

The novelisation’s announcement does not yet include a precise publication date, format, price or international release information. For now, the confirmed details are the 2027 window, Tsukiji’s involvement as writer and Takada’s role on the cover. That makes it a useful expansion of the project rather than evidence of a new anime season or a separate sequel.12

The wider Patlabor EZY project

Patlabor EZY is directed by Yutaka Izubuchi at J.C. Staff, with Kazunori Itō writing the script, Masami Yuuki designing the characters and Kenji Kawai composing the music. The wider Patlabor creative group remains involved, including the HEADGEAR team behind the original concept.2

The anime’s theatrical structure means the novelisation arrives while the screen project is still completing its final instalment. It could offer readers another way into the 2030s setting, but Fantasia Bunko has not said whether the book will retell the films, expand their stories or follow an original plot. Those details will need to wait for a fuller publisher announcement.

An official Patlabor EZY trailer gives a flavour of the updated police-Labor designs and the project’s visual direction, but it does not announce the book’s release date or contents.3

Our opinion

The novelisation is a sensible fit for Patlabor EZY: the franchise has always had room for workplace detail, social change and machinery that feels like part of everyday life. Bringing in a novelist with established light-novel experience, alongside Akemi Takada’s cover art, gives the book a recognisable creative identity rather than treating it as disposable tie-in material. The important caveat is that the announcement is still early. Until Fantasia Bunko confirms the format, exact date and whether the story expands the films, the 2027 window is the headline — not a promise of a fully mapped-out companion series.

For readers in the UK and elsewhere, there is also no international publication announcement yet. The anime itself is opening theatrically in Japan, so overseas readers should treat any future novelisation availability as unconfirmed until a local publisher or distributor speaks up.
