Sanrio Characters photo cases launch in Japan this week

Six Sanrio character designs arrive as compact photo-and-coin cases in Japanese capsule machines from 21 October.

Sanrio Characters is getting a tiny new accessory for fans who want to carry a favourite photo — and a few coins — on the go. The Retro Cute Photo Case capsule collection launches in Japan from 21 October, with stock available while supplies last. 1

The cases are compact, foldable holders with a clear pocket for an identification photo or mini print, plus a button-fastened coin pocket. Each one has a ball chain so it can be clipped to a bag, pouch or set of keys. 1

Six designs, one capsule collection

The range includes Hello Kitty, Pochacco, Cinnamoroll, My Melody, Keroppi and Cheery Chums. The product announcement shows all six designs, with each case using a different retro-pop colour scheme and character illustration. 1

Each case costs ¥704 including tax and measures roughly 5cm by 5cm. The collection will be distributed through Aeon Fantasy locations and capsule-toy shops including Molly Fantasy, PALO, TOYS SPOT PALO, Capsule Yokocho and Feedy Arcade, although individual stock and participating shops may vary. 1

The release comes from Aeon Fantasy, which says the collection will be offered through its cashless Kapuebo capsule machines. That makes this a small piece of merchandise rather than a new Sanrio game or animation project: the appeal is the practical combination of a photo holder, coin pouch and character charm. 1

AnimeAnime also reports that the product is scheduled to appear from 21 October and will be sold until it runs out. The retailer warns that launch dates and locations can change, so collectors should check the relevant shop before travelling. 2

Our opinion

This is a neat bit of everyday fan merchandise because the cases have a clear use beyond simply displaying a character. The photo pocket and coin compartment make the tiny accessory more functional than a standard acrylic charm, while the six-design line-up gives collectors a straightforward reason to hunt for a favourite. The limited, location-dependent rollout is the catch: availability will matter more than the headline price once the machines begin to empty.
