Spirited Away (千と千尋の神隠し) is heading on a major international stage tour, with the production scheduled to visit Taipei, Tokyo, Toronto, Los Angeles and London between December 2026 and 2028. The official production website describes the show as John Caird's stage reimagining of Studio Ghibli's Oscar-winning film, created by Hayao Miyazaki.1

The tour begins at Taipei's National Theatre on Dec. 17, 2026, and continues there until Jan. 31, 2027. Tokyo follows with performances at the Meijiza Theatre from March through May 2027, before the production makes its North American live-performance debut in Toronto on May 6, 2027. The Toronto run is scheduled to continue through Aug. 15.2

The show then moves to Los Angeles, where it is due to play the Ahmanson Theatre from Sept. 2 to Oct. 24, 2027. Its currently announced final stop is London's Coliseum, with performances listed from March 2028 onwards. The production previously enjoyed a sold-out London run in 2024, and the new schedule expands its international reach rather than simply repeating that engagement.2

The stage adaptation first premiered in Tokyo in 2022. John Caird, whose credits include Les Misérables, directs the production, while the new tour includes returning performers alongside newly announced cast members. Kanna Hashimoto and Mone Kamishiraishi are set to reprise their shared role as Chihiro, with Nagi Inoue, Hana Toyoshima, Kokoro Hirasawa, Momoko Fukuchi and Marina Mori also joining the wider cast.2

The Toronto and Los Angeles dates are particularly notable for anime fans in North America: although a filmed version of the stage production has been screened there, this tour marks the first time the live show itself is scheduled to play those cities. The official site is currently inviting fans to register for priority booking, so ticket-sale details may vary by venue and location.1

Our opinion

This tour makes Spirited Away feel like a genuine international theatre production rather than a one-off anime event. The most useful part of the announcement is the route: Toronto and Los Angeles finally get the live show, while London returns as a major closing engagement. The production's strongest selling point is still the collision between Miyazaki's familiar world and Caird's practical stage language, and the official gallery's images show that the live version has its own visual identity instead of attempting to imitate the film frame for frame.
