The Summer Hikaru Died manga ends after five years

The Summer Hikaru Died has concluded with Chapter 51 on Young Ace UP, ending Mokumokuren’s five-year supernatural manga serial.

The Summer Hikaru Died anime character in an official Netflix trailer still

The Summer Hikaru Died has ended its five-year manga run, with the final chapter now published on Kadokawa’s Young Ace UP web manga platform. The series began serialization in August 2021 and concluded with Chapter 51 on October 20, 2026. 1

Created by Mokumokuren, The Summer Hikaru Died follows Yoshiki Tsujinaka, an ordinary high-school student whose childhood friend Hikaru returns after disappearing in the mountains. Yoshiki soon realises that the being wearing Hikaru’s face is not the friend he knew, setting the story on a path through rural unease, grief and escalating supernatural horror. 1

The finale closes a manga that became one of the most prominent recent horror titles to emerge from Young Ace UP. The anime adaptation brought the story to a wider international audience when it streamed on Netflix, while a second season has already been confirmed. No release date has been announced for that continuation. 2

The ending also gives readers a clear point at which to experience the complete story rather than catching up with an ongoing serial. That matters for a mystery built around the question of what happened to Hikaru: readers can now follow Yoshiki’s relationship with the replacement from the opening chapters through to the conclusion without waiting for another instalment.

The adaptation’s official Netflix trailer is used here as a visual reference for the anime version of the story, rather than as artwork from the manga’s final chapter. 3

Our opinion

A finished supernatural mystery is worth flagging precisely because its ending changes how readers can approach it. The Summer Hikaru Died has spent five years making the gap between a familiar face and a familiar person increasingly unsettling; now that Chapter 51 is available, newcomers can judge the full shape of that idea in one continuous read.

The anime’s second season means this is not necessarily the last time the series will be in the news, but the manga’s central story has reached its conclusion. Readers looking for a completed psychological-horror manga can now add it to their list without an unfinished-serial warning.
