The Uta Macross rhythm game is the subject of a new project seeking to rebuild it as an offline release after the mobile service ended in 2022.

The team behind Uta Macross: Smartphone De Culture has launched a project to bring the rhythm game back as an offline version. The original mobile service ended in 2022, but the new initiative says it wants to put the songs and crossover cast back in players’ hands.

The project is currently seeking support through Campfire, with public launch scheduled for 10 September 2026. Its stated target is ¥30 million (about US$190,000 / €161,000 / £139,000), and the campaign page says the finished product is intended to be available internationally, although platform details and a release date have not yet been confirmed.

A Macross archive with buttons

Uta Macross brought together characters and music from across the Macross franchise in a mobile rhythm-game format. Rebuilding it offline could preserve more than a service: it could keep its songs, illustrations and crossover history accessible without requiring a live connection.

The campaign is still at the pre-launch stage, so scope, licensing, supported devices and whether the offline edition includes the full catalogue remain unconfirmed.

Our opinion

This is the right kind of nostalgia project. An offline version would give Uta Macross a life beyond a shutdown notice, and the franchise has exactly the sort of music library that deserves preservation. The catch is licensing: rebuilding a crossover game is less like restoring a file and more like getting an entire fleet of rights-holders to fly in formation.
