Yona of the Dawn is officially returning for a sequel anime, with PIERROT FILMS confirmed as the animation studio handling production.1 The announcement continues the story of the 2014 television series, which adapted Mizuho Kusanagi’s long-running manga.

A long-awaited return

The sequel news arrives as the original manga reaches its conclusion. The series began in 2009 and ended its main run in 2025, with the final 48th volume released in July 2026 after a concluding side story.1 That gives the anime a completed foundation to draw from, even though details about the sequel’s format, episode count and release date have not yet been announced.

PIERROT FILMS is a newer animation brand from Studio Pierrot, the studio that also worked on the original Yona of the Dawn anime. The announcement therefore keeps the production connected to the franchise’s previous adaptation while placing the sequel under the newer PIERROT FILMS identity.12

The original television anime ran for 24 episodes between October 2013 and March 2014. It follows Yona, a princess forced to flee her palace after a devastating betrayal, as she begins a journey through a kingdom shaped by political conflict, legend and the bonds she builds with her companions. Crunchyroll currently lists the existing episodes for streaming, according to the announcement source.1

The official announcement shared by the anime’s account confirms the studio, but not much else. There is no confirmed premiere window, cast announcement, trailer or new key visual for the sequel yet. Further production details are expected later, so readers should treat the project as confirmed but still early in development.1

Our opinion

This is exactly the sort of sequel announcement that benefits from patience. Yona of the Dawn has a substantial story still to adapt, and the manga’s conclusion gives the production a clearer destination than it had during the original run. PIERROT FILMS’ involvement also makes sense as a continuation of Studio Pierrot’s relationship with the property, but the studio name alone does not tell us how quickly the sequel will arrive or how much of the remaining manga it will cover.

For now, the meaningful news is simple: Yona’s anime story is moving again. A release date, returning cast and first footage will tell us far more about the shape of the comeback.
